  • Hoovers Online:   Under Business Databases on the Foster Business Library homepage. Hoovers Online offers information about 14,000 public and private companies worldwide, with links to company homepages and annual reports, charts, company capsule, competitors, divisions, earnings, financials, Fortune and Forbes rankings, history, industry information, insider trading, mission statements, news links, press releases, officers, patents, products, SEC filings, splits, subsidiaries, etc.

  • Investext:   On the Foster Business Library homepage, listed under Business Databases. Investext contains indexing and the full text of company and industry research reports prepared by leading Wall Street firms, as well as regional and international brokerage and financial firms. All reports are in PDF format.

    A company search for the ticker symbol SGEN produced a list of over 80 reports, from research firms such as Hambrecht, Wachovia, and Life Science Analytics. An industry search for the Biotechnology industry produced over 14,600 reports.

  • Lexis-Nexis Academic:   On the Foster homepage, under Business Databases. To find company information, go to Business and then to Company Financial where you can obtain financial and other data for companies. Information is available from twenty different sources (each of which must be searched separately). SEC filings, particularly company 10K annual reports, are a particularly rich source of company as well as industry information. Use your browser's Find command (or Control-F) to locate references to particular terms of interest in 10K filings such as trends, strategy, competitors, industry, etc.

    This database includes 19 SEC 10-K filings (or parts of filings) for Seattle Genetics, back to 2002, with chapters on the company's strategy, competitive strengths, market opportunities, license agreements, etc.

  • Forrester Research:   Under Business Databases on the Foster Business Library homepage. Forrester Research provides access to reports and briefings on the effects of technology change on businesses, consumers, and society, and analyzes such technology areas as new media, computing, software, networking, telecommunications, and the Internet. To use this database, UW users must establish a personal account from a UW IP address. (Available from off-campus.)

    An advanced search for the exact phrase Seattle Genetics retrieved no reports; a search for Biotechnology retrieved just nine reports. This database does not cover this industry.

  • Mergent Online:   On the Foster Business Library homepage, listed under Business Databases. Online access to the print edition of the Mergent Manuals, with extensive information on 11,000 U.S. and 17,000 international companies, including financials, stock, properties, joint ventures, annual reports, subsidiaries, S.E.C. filings, etc. For search tips, see About Mergent Online.

    Seattle Genetics is included in this database, with extensive information. An industry search for the SIC code 8731, Commercial Physical Research, produced a list of 131 competitor companies.

  • ReferenceUSA:   On the Foster Business Library homepage, listed under Business Databases; also listed under Company and Industry. Directory information for 12 million companies in the U.S.  Companies can be searched for by name, business activity, size and location. With this database, it is possible to identify businesses by geographic area and type of business, as well as by number of employees and gross annual sales. (This database is available widely on campus and may be accessed from home via the U.W. connectivity kit or via the Libraries' proxy server.)

    A custom search for the NAICS code for Biotechnology, NAICS 541710, produced over 30,000 firms in the U.S., including over 750 in the state of Washington.

  • Value Line:   On the Foster Business Library homepage, listed under Business Databases.   Stock information and advice on 1,700 companies, 90 industries, the stock markets and the economy; an online version of the print Value Line Investment Survey. To search for companies or industries, go to the left menu for Look Up Company or Look Up Industry.

    Seattle Genetics is not included in this database but the Biotechnology Industry is, with 32 companies profiled.

    CD-ROM database:

  • CorpTech EXPLORE:   On the Library CD-ROM Network, this CD ROM database is a more up-to-date version of the four-volume, year 2000 CorpTech directory of technology companies in the Foster Business Library Reference Collection (call number HG4057 .A16), with company profiles for more than fifty thousand U.S. high technology firms in such industries as biotechnology, chemical, computer hardware, defense, energy, pharmaceuticals, photonics, telecommunications and internet, etc. Companies may be searched by geography and many other criteria. This database is only available on public computer #19 in the Foster Business Library.

    A search, under Primary Industries, for Biotechnology, produced a list of 1,231 companies.

Web Resources:

    Unlike library databases, these Web resources are available wherever you have web access; they do not require that you access them via the UW Connectivity Kit or the UW Libraries Proxy Server for authentication.   • Seattle Genetics, Inc.:   Company websites often provide extensive amounts of corporate information including histories of the company, investor information such as annual reports and Securities and Exchange Commission filings, historical stock prices, executive biographies, company news and press releases, etc. Look for this information under headings for Investor Relations, About The Company, etc. Go to About in the top menu for corporate information and links to their history, management, business strategy, and alliances. See their News & Investor Information for S.E.C. filings, financial reports, etc., including annual reports from 2001 to 2003.

  • Yahoo! Finance:   This site is excellent for company and investment information as well as an excellent source for financial ratio comparisons with industry, sector and S&P 500. See the company profile for Seattle Genetics and their Key Statistics, as well as the excellent Competitors and Ratios sections. See also the link to Yahoo! Finance's Biotechnology and Drugs Industry Center.

  • Business Full Coverage (Yahoo! Daily News):   Yahoo! Daily News for business includes Business Full Coverage webpages for four dozen important business topics of high interest. These full coverage reports collect articles, webpages, and links to relevant organizations, audio, video, and recent news stories. See Biotechnology and Genetics.

  • Industry Profiles (Wetfeet.Com):   This job hunting site from Wetfeet.Com offers profiles of 31 industries, with an industry overview, trends, industry organization, job prospects, what's great and what's to hate in the industry, from the viewpoint of a jobseeker, major companies in the industry, and example job descriptions and tips on how to get hired in the industry. There are also links to industry associations and a profile of an individual working in the industry. The amount of industry information makes up for annoying popups.   • Biotechnology Information Directory:   This site is an information portal for biotechnology, with links to sources of information, publications, products, services, clinical trials, software, companies in the industry, education, and more.

  • About Biotech:   This site is part of the offerings of the National Health Museum, intended to provide "high school biology and life science teachers access to their colleagues, scientists, and critical sources of new scientific information via the World Wide Web. The program was originally developed and launched by Genentech Inc., a leading biotechnology company that discovers, develops, manufactures and markets human pharmaceuticals for significant unmet medical needs." This site is a good starting point for understanding the biotechnology industry, with links to the chronology of biotech, biotechnology in pharmaceuticals, food, farms and forensics, and biotech issues and ethics.   • Biotechnology Industry Organization:   "In 1993, when there were but a handful of biotechnology drugs on the market and the sequencing of the human genome was pegged for completion somewhere around 2005, two small Washington-based biotechnology trade organizations merged to create the Biotechnology Industry Organization, better known as BIO. One of the founding organizations, the Industrial Biotechnology Association (IBA), primarily represented larger, established companies on Capitol Hill and before federal regulatory agencies; the other, the Association of Biotechnology Companies (ABC), represented emerging companies and universities, and focused on technology transfer issues, meetings and other business development activities.   • Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America:   "The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) represents the country's leading research-based pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies." See the link to their Industry Profile 2004 (61 PDF pages).

  • Biopharmaceutical Industry Contributions to State and U.S. Economies:   This 215-page report, in PDF format, from the Milken Institute, assesses the state of the biopharmaceutical industry and its economic and job impact on the states and on the U.S. economy. Access to this report requires free registration. For a summary of the report's stated impact on Washington state, see "Slowdown seen in state's biopharmaceutical industry" (by Brad Wong, Seattle Post-Intelligencer, October 12, 2004).

  • The Business of Biotech:   This article in the online edition of the June 2000 issue of the Harvard Business School Bulletin describes where the industry is headed, with comments from industry veterans and experts.

  • U.S. Food and Drug Administration:   This government agency regulates the pharmaceutical industry in the U.S. as well as the medical product and devices marketplace. See the link for the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research; among other things, see its Information about the Products We Regulate.

  • U.S. Office of Biotechnology Activities:   This office, part of the National Institutes of Health, "monitors scientific progress in human genetics research in order to anticipate future developments, including ethical, legal, and social concerns, in basic and clinical research involving Recombinant DNA, Genetic Technologies, and Xenotransplantation," among many activities.

  • Standard & Poor's industry surveys.
    This three-volume set provides 30-page profiles on 52 industries with a focus on the current economic environment, trends, regulation and outlook for each industry. Major companies in each industry are profiled, with references to sources of additional industry information.

    This excellent reference work provides essays, mostly by professors of economics, about 14 significant industries:  automobiles, beer, broilers, pharmaceuticals, steel, airline service, retail commercial banking, casino gambling, electric power, health insurance, motion pictures, nursing homes, microcomputer platforms, and telecommunications.

    This annual publication is an invaluable source of information about public and private companies in the Puget Sound area, culled from lists that appeared weekly in the Puget Sound Business Journal. Besides lists of the largest and fastest growing public and private companies in the area, this reference work includes commercial real estate deals, banks and securities firms, contractors, education and employment, etc. There is an index to companies and topics in the back of this volume.

For each product or service, there is a brief indication of the value of the U.S. market in 1998 and the compound U.S. market growth rate from 1993 to 1998 as well as a graph depicting market value in dollars and the growth rate. There is also a brief analysis of the market sectors for the product or service and a description of the market segmentation by volume for 1997, plus U.S. market share and market forecast information.

    Electronic journals on Biotechnology, available to authorized UW users, include:

    In addition to the 800 journals in the Foster Business Library Periodicals Collection, the Foster Business Library offers access to 11,000 full text periodical articles through its full text article databases such as: ABI/Inform Global, Factiva, and Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe. These article databases may be found on the Foster Business Library homepage, listed alphabetically under Business Databases.

    Of these three main sources, all but Factiva are available from any computer on the campus network (as well as from home) via the UW Connectivity Kit or via the Libraries' proxy server.   • ABI/Inform Global:

    This database offers full text articles for over 800 journals. To find articles on specific topics, search by word or phrase by keying your search phrase into the search box. ABI/Inform Global includes journals but not national or Washington state newspapers (though the Wall Street Journal is included). It also does not include valuable trade and industry and other periodicals. Your searches will span the widest possible array of publications by expanding your search to all databases in ABI/Inform. To expand your search to include all collections in this database, click on Select multiple databases, to the right of the search box. Click on all of the databases.

    Your search terms will be highlighted in red in each article. For tips on searching this database, click here.

    For example, a search in all databases, for CO(Seattle Genetics), produced a list of over 40 articles, including two articles in magazines, 14 articles in trade and industry publications, and over two dozen articles in newspapers. As an example, see "Bio-Boom: Seattle Genetics sees three years of rapid revenue growth" (Puget Sound Business Journal, July 23, 2004).

    A search for CO(Seattle Genetics) and Strategy produced just two articles:  "Seattle Genetics names its top scientist as CEO" (Seattle Times, November 28, 2002) and "Biotechs making a comeback here" (Seattle Post-Intelligencer, March 17, 2000).

    A broader search, for SUB(Biotechnology Industry), produced a list of over 2,900 articles, including over 160 articles in scholarly journals, over 200 articles in magazines, over 1,200 articles in trade and industry publications, and over 800 articles in newspapers.

    A narrower search, for SUB(Biotechnology Industry) and Market Share, produced just eleven articles,
