Foster Business Library Databases:

The Foster Business Library offers an extensive collection of business databases on its homepage; see under Business Databases; see also the four folders at the top of that list for lists of Foster databases by topic:  books, articles—full text, articles--citations and abstracts, and company and industry.   For more information on the three dozen Foster business databases, click here.   For more information about which of the three dozen Foster business databases to use, click here.   For more information on accessing Foster databases from off campus, click here. For answers to some frequently-asked questions about connecting to UW library databases from off-campus, click here. And, finally, see the UW Libraries' Database Usage Guidelines.

  • Hoovers Online:   Under Business Databases on the Foster Business Library homepage. Hoovers Online offers information about 14,000 public and private companies worldwide, with links to company homepages and annual reports, charts, company capsule, competitors, divisions, earnings, financials, Fortune and Forbes rankings, history, industry information, insider trading, mission statements, news links, press releases, officers, patents, products, SEC filings, splits, subsidiaries, etc. Most information on this site is free and available on the Web (not just through the Foster Business Library homepage) but, via the Foster homepage, you can access the more detailed Premium Content.

See the industry overview for the Airlines industry. See also the company overview for Southwest Airlines and their Competitive Landscape. See also the list of about 75 companies, headquartered in Mexico, that are in the Hoovers Online database.

  • Lexis-Nexis Academic:   To find company information, go to Business and then to Company Financial where you can obtain financial and other data for companies. Information is available from twenty different sources (each of which must be searched separately). Included among the sources is Hoovers Online, with members' access to company profiles. SEC filings, particularly company 10K annual reports, are a particularly rich source of company as well as industry information. Use your browser's Find command (or Control-F) to locate references to particular terms of interest in 10K filings such as trends, strategy, competitors, industry, etc. (This database is available widely on campus and may be accessed from home via the U.W. connectivity kit or via the Libraries' proxy server.)

Searching in SEC 10-K filings and reports for Southwest Airlines, with the ticker symbol LUV, retrieved over 100 of the company's annual 10-K reports, parts of reports, and amendments. back to 1987.

  • Investext:   On the Foster Business Library homepage, listed under Business Databases; also listed under Company and Industry. Investext contains indexing and the full text of company and industry research reports prepared by leading Wall Street firms, as well as regional and international brokerage and financial firms. All reports are in PDF format. (This database is available widely on campus and may be accessed from home via the U.W. connectivity kit or via the Libraries' proxy server.)

A company search for the company, with the ticker symbol LUV, produced a list of more than 900 reports about the company. An industry search for Air Transportation produced a list of over 10,000 reports.

  • Euromonitor:   This database provides global consumer market information, with demographics, trends and developments, market background, market sizes and forecasts, market shares, key players, and company profiles. This database provides over 1,800 reports with market data and detailed company profiles, including market shares, brand information, company strategy and SWOT analyses of the companies, for many countries. For eight major countries (Australia, China, France, Germany, Japan, South Korea, the United Kingdom and the United States), in-depth industry information is also available.

A search, in Region/Country, under Latin America, for Mexico, produced just 17 reports, including a year 2000 report on travel and tourist in Mexico. A search for Airlines produced six reports, for the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and U.S.

  • EIU Online:   One of the world's top sources for country intelligence, the EIU (Economist Intelligence Unit) employs 500 analysts who research almost 200 nations. An advanced search in Viewswires, for Airline Industry retrieved a list of over 670 articles. A search for Southwest Airlines produced over 160 articles. See also, for more general information on the country, the extensive country home page for Mexico.

  • Value Line:   On the Foster Business Library homepage, listed under Business Databases.   Stock information and advice on 1,700 companies, 90 industries, the stock markets and the economy; an online version of the print Value Line Investment Survey. Web Resources:

Unlike library databases, these online resources are available wherever you have web access; they do not require that you access them via the UW Connectivity Kit or the UW Libraries Proxy Server for authentication. For links to business websites by topic, see Business Resources on the Web on the Foster Business Library homepage. Good sources for business topics include trade associations (which often provide industry data unavailable elsewhere) and government regulatory and oversight agencies (which are also a good source for industry data). When using web resources, be sure to evaluate the credibility of these resources.

  • Southwest Airlines:   Company websites often provide extensive amounts of corporate information including histories of the company, investor information such as annual reports and Securities and Exchange Commission filings, historical stock prices, executive biographies, company news and press releases, etc. Look for this information under headings for Investor Relations, About The Company, etc.

See the About SWA tab at the top of the homepage for corporate information and Investor Relations for financials, SEC filings, etc.

  • Yahoo! Finance:   This site is excellent for company and investment information as well as an excellent source for financial ratio comparisons with industry, sector and S&P 500.

See the company profile for Southwest Airlines and their Airlines Industry Center.

  • International Air Transport Association:   This trade organization is one of the industry's largest, with 230 member airlines from 130 countries, representing both cargo and passenger transport. Its website offers information about the industry worldwide. The Foster Business Library subscribes to several IATA publications:   IATA news review (International Air Transport Association), v. 3-10 no. 3.   (1968-1975)   Continued by World airline cooperation review;   Review (International Air Transport Association), (1985-1993); and World airline cooperation review, v.10 no.5-v.19   (July/Aug. 1975-1984)   Continued by Review (International Air Transport Association).

While many of their publications are fee-based, this association does offer data and statistics to nonmembers. See U.S. Airline Industry Facts, Figures, and Economic Analyses.

  • U.S. Federal Aviation Administration:   Governmental agencies are often excellent sources of information about the industries they monitor and regulate. This agency covers a wide variety of aviation matters, from general aviation to major airlines, from safety and security to regulations. From the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, see, among many statistics, Airline On-Time Statistics. See also the Department of Transportation's Frequently Asked Questions about Airports & Airplanes.

  • Tourism Industries (International Trade Administration):   Government agencies can be an excellent source for extensive, free industry data and research. The International Trade Administration is part of the U.S. Department of Commerce and is charged with assisting, promoting and facilitating international trade of U.S. goods and services.

See their Industry News, Tourism Statistics, Research, and Links.

  • Travel Industry Association of America:   Trade associations are often excellent sources for industry information and data, frequently more detailed than the data from governmental organizations. The "Travel Industry Association of America, in existence since 1941, is a ... Washington, D.C. based, non-profit association that represents and speaks for the common interests and concerns of all components of the U.S. travel industry." The association "represent more than 2,100 travel-related businesses, associations, and local, regional and state promotional agencies."

Much of the research on this site is available only at a price but some industry information is available free; see, for instance, Economic Impact of Travel and Tourism. This site has a search engine.

  • World Travel & Tourism Council:   This organization is composed of the chief executives of travel and tourism industry organizations worldwide. The site lacks a search engine.

    See their TSA Research.

  • Career Guide to Industries:   This Bureau of Labor Statistics site, part of the online Occupational Outlook Handbook, offers a career-oriented description of many industries, with information on the nature of the industry, working conditions, employment, occupations in the industry, training, earnings and outlook, as well as sources of additional information.

    See Air Transportation.

  • U.S. Embassies:   The United States State Department has embassies and consulates worldwide, with their individual websites often providing valuable local information for business under the heading of the U.S. Commercial Service. The Commercial Service provides information for U.S. businesses interested in exporting to the country as well as information for companies in the country where the embassy is located to source U.S. products.

See the U.S. Embassy in Mexico and the Trade and Commerce Section in Mexico. See their Doing Business in Mexico.
