Foster Business Library Databases:

The Foster Business Library offers an extensive collection of over fifty databases on its homepage; see under Databases. For a complete list of Foster databases, see the List of All Business Databases. Access to these databases from off campus requires that you first go to the Off-Campus Access button, in the upper right of all library webpages. These resources may not be accessed from off campus except by those with a valid UW Net ID and password. For more information on Foster business databases, click Databases, A-Z. For information on which Foster business databases to use, see the Database Index. For information on accessing Foster databases from off campus, see Database Access. For guidelines on responsible database usage, see Database Usage.

  • EIU Online:   One of the world's top sources for country intelligence, the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) employs 500 analysts who research almost 200 nations. The Foster Business Library provides access to their Country Profiles, Country Reports, Country Commerce, and Country Finance in print editions and this database provides online access to these publications, often in both HTML and PDF formats.

See this database's extensive country information for Saudi Arabia, for the monthly Country Reports, the annual Country Profiles, the annual Country Commerce report, and more, including a long Risk Report for the country.

  • Euromonitor:   This database provides global consumer market information, with demographics, trends and developments, market background, market sizes and forecasts, market shares, key players, and company profiles. This database provides over 1,800 reports with market data and detailed company profiles, including market shares, brand information, company strategy and SWOT analyses of the companies, for many countries. For eight major countries (Australia, China, France, Germany, Japan, South Korea, the United Kingdom and the United States), in-depth industry information is also available.

A search in Region/Country for Saudi Arabia produced just four reports, with none for apparel, but including one for alcoholic beverages. Victoria's Secret is mentioned in a report entitled Clothing retailers in the USA June 2004.

  • Gale Virtual Reference Library:   On the Foster Business Library homepage, listed under List of All Business Databases.   The Gale Virtual Reference Library is a database of encyclopedias, almanacs, and specialized reference sources for multidisciplinary research; go to Business for three major business sources:   the Encyclopedia of American Industries (4th ed., 2005), the Encyclopedia of Business and Finance (2001), and the Encyclopedia of Small Business (2nd ed., 2002).

Under Nation and World, see Countries and Their Cultures, 2001; see the section on Saudi Arabia. See also Saudi Arabia in the Worldmark Encyclopedia of National Economies.

  • Hoovers Online:   Under Business Databases on the Foster Business Library homepage. Hoovers Online offers information about 14,000 public and private companies worldwide, with links to company homepages and annual reports, charts, company capsule, competitors, divisions, earnings, financials, Fortune and Forbes rankings, history, industry information, insider trading, mission statements, news links, press releases, officers, patents, products, SEC filings, splits, subsidiaries, etc.

See the company fact sheet for Victoria's Secret Stores, Inc. as well as the company fact sheet for its parent company, Intimate Brands, which in turn is owned by Limited Brands, Inc. The catalog operation is a separate company, Victoria's Secret Direct (also an Intimate Brands subsidiary). See also the fact sheet for the Apparel & Accessories Retail industry. Hoovers Online also offers a very short list of companies headquartered in Saudi Arabia for which it provides some level of coverage.

  • Investext:   On the Foster Business Library homepage, listed under Business Databases. Investext contains indexing and the full text of company and industry research reports prepared by leading Wall Street firms, as well as regional and international brokerage and financial firms. • Lexis-Nexis Academic:   To find company information, go to Business and then to Company Financial where you can obtain financial and other data for companies. Information is available from twenty different sources (each of which must be searched separately). Securities and Exchange Commission filings, particularly company 10-K annual reports, are a particularly rich source of company as well as industry information. Use your browser's Find command (or Control-F) to locate references to particular terms of interest in 10K filings such as trends, strategy, competitors, industry, etc.

This database includes over 170 S.E.C.10-K filings (or parts of filings) for Limited Brands. The latest filing includes over a dozen references to Victoria's Secret but none for Saudi Arabia.

Web Resources:

Unlike library databases, Web resources are available wherever you have web access; they do not require that you access them via the Off-Campus Access button, in the upper right of all library webpages. When using web resources, be sure to evaluate the credibility of these resources. For a subject index to web resources, see Business Resources on the Web on the Foster Business Library homepage.

  • Limited Brands:   Public company homepages are often (but not always) an excellent source for information about the company, with links to annual reports, company news, product details, information about corporate goals and culture, company financial information, Securities and Exchange Commission filings, and company history. Look for the Investor Relations and About Us areas on the company homepage for company information. See the Our Brands section for Victoria's Secret Stores; the store locator includes no stores outside the U.S. For information about Limited Brands, see About Our Company and Investor Relations, with annual reports back to 1995. There is no mention of Saudi Arabia in the 2004 annual report.

  • U.S. Embassies:   The United States State Department has embassies and consulates worldwide, with their individual websites often providing valuable local information for business under the heading of the U.S. Commercial Service. The Commercial Service provides information for U.S. businesses interested in exporting to the country as well as information for companies in the country where the embassy is located to source U.S. products. See Saudi Arabia and the U.S. Commercial Service in that country.

  • Foreign Embassies in the U.S.:   Foreign embassies in the United States often provide English-language websites with substantial offerings of trade and economic information about the country itself and its commercial relations with the U.S. These sites often include links to further information such as national statistical agencies, trade confederations and manufacturers associations. See the Facts & Figures from the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia, and information about its Economy & Global Trade.

  • World Factbook:   These brief country profiles (prepared by the Central Intelligence Agency) offer information about government, economy, GDP, CPI, labor force, unemployment rate, budget, industries, agriculture, export, import, telecommunications, debt, foreign aid, etc. See Saudi Arabia.

  • World Bank Private Sector Development:   This World Bank site "offers best practice public policy advice for private sector led growth in developing countries. Find expert analysis, powerful databases, quick solutions, and comprehensive "how-to" guides." In particular, see their Business Environment section, which allows you to measure how a country measures up to regional and international standards across a range of criteria involved in setting up or operating a business; it is also possible to compare countries; over 140 countries are included. See Saudi Arabia.

  • NationMaster.Com:   This Australian site uses data from the CIA World Factbook and many other sources to provide graphic rankings, lists and interactive comparisons for countries' crime, economy, education, energy, environment, geography, government, health, media, military, people, religion, sports, and transportation, for 251 countries. This site also enables viewing of individual country profiles, with maps and flags, and of regions and groupings. See Saudi Arabia.

  • Wikipedia:   This free online user-created and maintained encyclopedia, Wikipedia, can be a good starting point for an orientation to a topic. See their entry on Saudi Arabia.
