  • EIU Online:   One of the world's top sources for country intelligence, the EIU (Economist Intelligence Unit) employs 500 analysts who research almost 200 nations. The Foster Business Library provides access to their Country Profiles, Country Reports, Country Commerce, and Country Finance in print editions and this database provides online access to these publications, often in both HTML and PDF formats.

An advanced search in Viewswires for Watch Industry retrieved a list of just seven articles, most of them about Switzerland. An advanced search in Viewswires, limited to the automotive industry, for BMW retrieved a list of over 500 articles.

  • Euromonitor:   This database provides global consumer market information, with demographics, trends and developments, market background, market sizes and forecasts, market shares, key players, and company profiles. This database provides over 1,800 reports with market data and detailed company profiles, including market shares, brand information, company strategy and SWOT analyses of the companies, for many countries. For eight major countries (Australia, China, France, Germany, Japan, South Korea, the United Kingdom and the United States), in-depth industry information is also available.

A search in this database, in titles, for Wrist Watches, produced just one report, on the United Kingdom market, dated 2002. Repeating the search in text produced over 25 reports (most of them chapters in the United Kingdom report). A search in this database, in text, for BMW, produced ten reports, including recent reports on the automobile aftercare and accessories markets in the U.S. and France, passenger cars in Germany, and the scooter market in the United Kingdom.

  • Lexis-Nexis Academic:   On the Foster homepage, under Business Databases. To find company information, go to Business and then to Company Financial where you can obtain financial and other data for companies. Information is available from twenty different sources (each of which must be searched separately). SEC filings, particularly company 10K annual reports, are a particularly rich source of company as well as industry information. Use your browser's Find command (or Control-F) to locate references to particular terms of interest in 10K filings such as trends, strategy, competitors, industry, etc.

For industry information, try the S.E.C. filings for a company that is primarily in the watch industry, such as Movado, for which this database has over 15 S.E.C. 10-K reports (or parts of reports). For instance, in their latest report, they note that the "largest markets for watches are North America, Western Europe and Asia. According to the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry, Swiss finished watch production was 25.9 million units or approximately 10.1 billion Swiss francs in 2003, a decrease of 4.4% or 461 million Swiss francs below 2002 production. The Company's Swiss watch brands include Movado, Concord, ESQ, Coach and as of March 1, 2004, Ebel." See the rest of the Industry Overview in this filing.

Web Resources:

Unlike library databases, these Web resources are available wherever you have web access; they do not require that you access them via the UW Connectivity Kit or the UW Libraries Proxy Server for authentication. When using web resources, be sure to evaluate the credibility of these resources. For a subject index to web resources, see Business Resources on the Web on the Foster Business Library homepage.

  • Movado Group, Inc:   Public company websites can be a rich source of information on corporate history, financials, marketing, news, and product information--or they can provide very little information about the company while furnishing a very large amount of product information. See their Investor Center for corporate information, including Business Overview & Strategy and Annual Reports, from 2000 to 2004.

  • BMW International:   For corporate rather than product and marketing information, go to the homepage for BMW Group. BMW of North America also has a homepage, with a link to Corporate Information. See their Technology & Innovation section as well as their News for information about recent sales figures. Click here for the hard-to-find investor information, including their Financial Reports Archive, with annual reports back to 1999. The BMW USA homepage provides consumers with an ability to Build Your BMW to customer specifications, with pricing and lease rates, with that information forwarded to their local BMW retailer. BMW USA also supports the BMW Car Club of America, with over 50,000 member/customers; purchasers of new or preowned BMWs are eligible for rebates of from $500 to $1500 through the club.

  • Yahoo! Finance:   This site is excellent for company and investment information as well as an excellent source for financial ratio comparisons with industry, sector and S&P 500. See the link to Yahoo! Finance's company profile for the Movado Group, its Competitors, and its industry, in this case Jewelry & Silverware; see also the industry centers for Jewelry & Silverware and Auto & Truck Manufacturers.

  • Automotive Intelligence:   This site provides information about automobile companies from around the world. Manufacturers are its main focus, but it has suppliers too. Revenues, production, employees, income, profits, and historical revenues are available in addition to information about the companies and about the automotobile industry. The site includes a search feature. See the company profile for BMW AG, with links to extensive information about sales by model and by region, as well as much other information. A site search for BMW at this site produced a list of over 1,600 articles. See also the data for worldwide sales by manufacturer for 1997, 1998, 1999, and 2000 as well as a list of companies ranked by market capitalization in December 2000.

  • U.S. Office of Automotive Affairs:   The mission of the U.S. Office of Automotive Affairs is to facilitate and expand global business opportunities for U.S. automotive vehicle and parts manufacturers. OAA's client companies range from General Motors - the world's largest corporation - to large, medium and small automotive parts and accessory suppliers. The Office maintains close relationships with a wide variety of individual U.S. and foreign-based companies and their representative trade associations. This office is part of the International Trade Administration in the U.S. Department of Commerce. See their Automobile Industry Data, Quick Facts on the U.S. motor vehicle market, and Import Requirements.

  • AutoIndex World Car Catalogue:   This site provides an extensive alphabetical index to car companies worldwide, grouped by Europe, North America, Asia, Australia, South America, and Africa. Click on the company name for a page of information, often including contact information, a company description, photos of the current models, photos of previous models, links to news, links to assembly plant information, and a list of variations. See BMW.

  • MarketResearch.Com:   Much of the most highly specific and targeted marketing research and intelligence is produced by commercial market research firms for corporate clients, with big business price tags (often in the thousands of dollars). Libraries, particularly at public universities, lack access to 75 page reports costing $2,000 but sometimes students find some value in the information disclosed in the abstracts of such research reports. MarketResearch.Com provides one-stop access to over 50,000 market research reports from 350 firms on 650 industry topics. Viewing of abstracts of reports requires free registration. See their listings for twelve reports, available for purchase, on the topic of "Wrist Watches" or over fifty reports on "Keyless Entry."
