Collection Assessment from Every Angle

Serials Worksheet

When selectors are looking at what journals to cancel, they need a variety of information to help with their decisions. Unfortunately, the reporting features of our ILS aren't adequate for our needs. Before this project, a selector had to look at several different reports and spreadsheets to gather information.

This project involved creating an Access database and uploading all of the data from all possible sources. Once the data was in the database, I developed a query to pull everything together into both an Excel spreadsheet with all the data, and also a printable PDF containing only summary data. These reports can be generated based on fund codes, so a selector can request a report for only those titles in their fund groups. Then, the selector can eyeball the PDF reportand then refer to the larger Excel spreadsheet for more details.

The various data elements imported into the database included:

The query was developed by matching on SLKlink between title and resource to tie together cancellation notes, and via ISSN to tie together titles with perpetual access and bibliometric values.
