Checking Out Materials
You must have a current University of Washington identification to borrow library materials. The library cashier in Suzzallo can provide information on borrowing privileges for persons not affiliated with the university. See Borrowing Services for general information about borrowing materials.
The circulation staff can check out library material, renew loans, answer basic location questions, search for missing items, and place holds on items that are checked out. The following loan periods apply:
| STATUS | BOOKS | PERIODICALS | PLAYS |
| UW Faculty/Graduate Students | 4 weeks or 12 weeks | 3 days | 2 weeks |
| UW Staff/Undergraduate | 4 weeks | 3 days | 2 weeks |
| Non-affiliated Borrowers | 2 weeks | 3 days | 2 weeks |
Dialect and sound effects material circulates for one week. Some materials are restricted to use in the library and do not circulate. The Sound Ideas sound effects are library use only, but sounds on them can be recorded in the library on either a cassette or mini-disc.
Reserve materials are requested at the circulation desk. The reserve file lists materials by faculty and course number. Materials are requested by call number; uncataloged materials are requested by title. "LIBRARY USE ONLY" items do not circulate overnight.
Reserves
Search for what's on reserve this quarter by faculty or course name.
Loan Period for Reserve Materials:
The person placing items on reserve determines the loan period and identifies whether books remain on reserve for a portion of the quarter, the entire quarter, or the academic year. Reserve materials have shorter circulation periods than non-reserve materials.
The most common circulation times are:
Because reserve material are in high demand, they are renewed only if the patron brings the book with them when they renew it and another copy is available for circulation. Reserve materials are not renewed over the phone.
If another copy is not available, the patron returns the item, waits 30 minutes, and requests it again.
Required and Recommended Class Reserves
Faculty and TAs place materials on reserve for specific classes. Occasionally a text is used for several courses taught by the same or different instructors. Required texts are frequently available in the Textbooks section at the University Bookstore. In addition faculty place recommended texts on reserve; these items may or may not be available in the Textbooks section of the University Bookstore.
Copies of Production Scripts on Reserve
Plays performed by the School of Drama as part of the department's production season and plays directed by undergraduate and graduate directing students as part of their class assignment are on reserve. The School of Drama Production Office places material on reserve prior to auditions. After auditions several copies may remain on reserve until after the show closes. These scripts are read by actors prior to auditions and by directing students during the run of the show. In addition other School of Drama classes may require their students to read the scripts.
On an individual basis local theatre companies may also place copies of plays on reserve prior to auditions.
