The East Asia Library supports the faculty and students in the Department of Asian Languages and Literature; the China Studies Program, the Japan Studies Program, and the Korean Studies Program and Center for Korea Studies in the Jackson School of International Studies; the East Asia Center; and the East Asia Resource Center. It is located on the third floor of Gowen Hall.

What's New
- East Asia Library and Taiwpei Economic and Cultural Office will co-host a post SIFF forum on Taiwan Films. Time: 3:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. Friday June 21, 2013. Place: Allen Auditorium, Allen Library, UW Seattle. Scholars, librarians, and journalists will discuss about the four films shown at the 2013 Seattle International Film Festival. - East Asia Library has recently received a gift of over 15,000 volumes of Korean graphic novels, or Manhwa in Korean. EAL is working with Preservations and Gift program to process the gift to make the books available to users. According to Hyokyoung Yi, Korean Studies Librarian at EAL, this is a very carefully built collection. It will significantly enhance the Korean collection at UW and provide exciting teaching, learning, and research opportunities for the study of Korean popular culture, as well as Korean studies in general.
- Ms Hsiu-lien Lu, a prominent writer, politician, and anti-nuclear activist from Taiwan, will visit the UW Libraries on the early afternoon of Friday April 5th. She will visit a book display about the Taiwan studies collection in the East Asia Library (322 Gowen Hall) and donate some of her works to the library. After that, Ms. Lu will deliver a speech at the Burke Museum (Burke Room, inside the front door of the museum) at 3:30 p.m., "A New Perspective on the Asia Pacific" (please see attached flyer). Everyone is welcome to attend.
- Thanks to the generous support of Center for Korean Studies and Dr. Aimee Lee, East Asia Library successfully hosted "Hanji Unfurled: One Journey in to Korean Papermaking," a presentation by Dr. Aimee Lee on paper and book and followed with a hands-on demonstration on March 14, 2013. Dr. Lee is an interdisciplinary artist who works in the areas of paper, book, performance, and installation arts. This public event attracted a large audience from faculty, students and local communities. (Please see original flyer).
- East Asia Library Lunar New Year Celebration on Feb. 14 Valentines Day was a great success. We express our special thanks to the wonderful dancers from the local Korean and Chinese communities for their beautiful ethnic dances and to our library staff member for his excellent performance of Japanese Kendo. We also thank Seattle Public Library for their collaboration and all the students, staff, and faculty members who joined us in celebrating the Lunar New Year of the Snake!
- UWL-NCL Chinese rare book digitization project was completed in December 2012 as planned. A total of 382 titles, 3483 volumes, and 236,377 images were scanned and have been made available at website of National Central Library in Taiwan (NCL). The bibliographical records of over 610 titles of UW EAL's ancient and rare Chinese books have been entered in NCL's Rare Book Image Search System.
