Logistics » Staying on Campus

See Getting Here for details on travel from the airport and checking-in at the residence hall.

Residence Hall Rooms

Institute attendees will be staying in single rooms in Hansee Hall. The striking Tudor architecture and beautiful common areas give Hansee a welcoming feel, and its main campus location offers easy access to classrooms, libraries and other campus resources.

Hansee Hall

Hansee Hall sleeping rooms are designed to accommodate one person. Hansee is made up of four houses: Austin, Blaine, Leary and McKee. Rooms are laid out corridor-style, and the four houses are connected. There are four bathrooms per floor. Hansee has striking Tudor architecture and beautiful lounges with grand pianos and fireplaces.

A kitchenette with a stove can be found on the 1st floor of Blaine, the 2nd floor of Austin, and the 3rd floor of Blaine and McKee. Microwaves can be found on all the other floors of the wings.

Hansee is located next door to McCarty Hall, home to Ian's Domain. Ian's Domain is an Internet Café with free Internet access, a big-screen TV lounge, an espresso bar and a convenience store. Conference dining is in McMahon Hall, just a short walk from Hansee.

Complimentary coffee and local newspapers are available each morning in the McMahon Hall lobby area prior to the opening of the dining facility.

Amenities

Bedding, towels, soap and drinking cups are provided. Institute Trainees’ towels are changed each day and linen once a week. Buildings are not air-conditioned; however, a small fan is placed in each sleeping room. Desk lamps and refrigerators can be checked out at the Residence Hall Desk. Trainees are notified by signs posted at the Residence Hall Desk if mail is received, and it is held at the Residence Hall Desk for pickup. Ethernet access is available in sleeping rooms for those who bring laptops.

Telephones providing guests with free local service are conveniently located in the common area or lounge on each residential floor. These telephones may be used for outgoing local calls or toll free calls, but are not programmed to receive calls. The Residence Hall Desk staff will take brief messages, and will post the names of guests for whom messages have been received at the Residence Hall Desk.

Institute Trainees will be asked to present photo identification to obtain a replacement key if they lock themselves out of their rooms. Anyone who loses their keys or who fails to return them at checkout is assessed an $85.00 plus tax charge to replace the room lock and key. This fee will be charged to Institute trainees.

Check-in and Residence Hall Desks

Desk Hours:
Throughout the summer the McMahon Hall Desk (206-543-7107) will be open 24 hours. The McCarty Hall Desk (206-543-5527) is open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Institute Trainees may check-in anytime after 2 p.m. and must check-out before 11 a.m.

Early Arrival/Late Departure:
Early-arrival and late-departure Institute Trainees may be housed in a different residence hall than where the Institute will be housed. Trainees will then move to the Institute’s assigned residence hall on the official check-in day. There is no refund for canceled early arrival or late departure nights.

What to Bring

Listed below are some items you might bring along to make your stay on campus more comfortable. Seattle weather is generally mild, with summer temperatures averaging 70-80°F. Heat waves occur occasionally, and most campus buildings, including the residence halls, are not air-conditioned; a fan is placed in each sleeping room. Be prepared for cooler evenings and some rain showers.

Should you prefer to bring your own pillow or towels, please be sure to choose a color other than white.

The University of Washington is an expansive campus with many remarkable sights to see. It is an extremely pedestrian-friendly campus, so bring comfortable shoes and be prepared to use them!

Smoking Policy

University residence halls and campus facilities offer a smoke-free environment. Smoking is prohibited by law in all areas—including lounges, laundry rooms, food service areas, sleeping and meeting rooms. A list of areas designated for smoking is available.

Dining with the Conference Card

Institute trainees will receive a conference card, which is programmed with $20 per day for the duration of the institute. These cards and the amount programmed onto them are included in the registration fee. The cards are meant to make breakfast and lunch easy and convenient so trainees won't miss out on class time. They can be used to purchase meals, snacks or espresso drinks at any designated Housing and Food Service dining location on campus, including 8 at McMahon, near the residence hall, and Suzzallo Espresso, next to the main classroom.

These cards must be treated and safeguarded like cash. Each time you make a purchase, the amount is deducted from the balance. After each purchase the remaining dollar amount shows on the cash register receipt so you can keep track of your remaining balance. There are no refunds for unused meal money. Trainees who exceed their allotted balance can pay the difference in cash.

Lost conference cards will be replaced for $10.00 plus tax Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Trainees will be charged this fee directly at the time of replacement. Go to the McCarty Desk to arrange a replacement card.

Meal service in 8 at McMahon, in McMahon Hall, offers a broad selection of menu items in an All-You-Care-to-Eat (AYCE) style designed to satisfy a variety of preferences. A meatless entrée is provided at every meal. Vegan and kosher menus are not available; however, a wide variety of food choices are offered which will accommodate most dietary restrictions.

Please let us know (chinlib@u.washington.edu) prior to your arrival if you have specific food allergies or concerns.

For other dining options near the University, visit the Visitor Info page. These local restaurants do not accept the Conference Card as payment.

Laundry

Washers and dryers are available in the residence halls and are operated using your plastic conference card. No funds are automatically on your card for laundry services. If you wish to deposit funds for use in the laundry, you may do so at the McCarty Desk. Please consider carefully how much you deposit, as these funds can only be used in the washers and dryers and any unused funds will not be refunded. Laundry supplies and other sundries are sold at the convenience store, Ian’s Domain, located in McCarty Hall.

Safety and Security

The University of Washington is committed to maintaining a safe environment; however, our campus can be subject to the same problems as the surrounding urban community. While many security measures have been taken in the residence halls to ensure your safety, it is important to remember that we are in a metropolitan area. Following a few simple guidelines will help to make your stay as safe as possible:

Room Security

University police patrol the residence halls at night, and Residence Hall Desk staff members are available to assist you 24 hours a day. While theft from guest rooms is rare, we strongly recommend that you keep your room and windows locked and your key with you at all times. Lock your door even when you are in your room, in the bathroom or in the vicinity of your room. Thieves usually gain access to rooms through unlocked doors and are able to complete a theft in a matter of seconds while residents are asleep.
