UW
Libraries Resources
After finding articles in
one of the above databases, you may need to check the UW
Libraries Catalog to see if the UW Libraries has the article you
need. If the UW doesn't have it, you may want to request it from UWorld
Express. If you are looking for a book, check the
Summit Catalog before requesting it from UWorld Express. To check
the source of a citation, if you are having trouble finding it, or to
see more information about a book or conference proceeding, use WorldCat,
a catalog of materials held in libraries around the world.

Federal
Government Agencies
The National Transportation
Library offers a Google search of all 50 state DOTs plus the District
of Columbia: http://ntl.bts.gov/faq/statedot.html
Department
of Transportation (DOT)
This is the mother of all federal transportation agencies. The amount
of information actually present on this site is not overwhelming. A
wealth of links to agencies that fall under the administration of the
DOT are presented. Also available are press releases from DOT and the
Secretary of Transportation. Agencies that deal with air, water, rail,
and intermodal transportation are all available here.
DOT
- Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS)
If there is one thing that the federal government does in an exemplary
fashion, it is collect statistics. This is the site to visit if you
are looking for any kind of data concerning transportation. Traffic
safety data, population figures, surface transport of commodities, and
more are available to help engineers plan forthcoming highway projects.
The link to the National Transportation Library: (http://ntl.bts.gov/
) is found here. There is also a link to the searchable TRIS database
maintained by the TRB: http://199.79.179.82/sundev/search.cfm
.
DOT
- Federal Highway Administration (FHWA)
A rich source of information; the FHWA administers a federal aid program
to states to help maintain the safety and integrity of the nation's
highways. Aid comes in the form of financial assistance as well as help
in planning and design of roads. The site provides access to publications
and statistics of FHWA (to be downloaded). Also available is a list
of current legislation affecting highway engineering and instructions
for procurement agencies. FHWA also makes available links to every state
transportation department at: http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/webstate.htm

Local
Government Agencies
Washington
State Department of Transportation (WSDOT)
There is a huge amount of information on this site. There are sections
for Traffic and Roads, Projects, Business with the DOT, Environmental,
and Maps and Data. The Environmental link takes you to the Environmental
Affairs Office: http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/eesc/environmental/, which offers
many regulatory documents including the 2001 Environmental Procedures
Manual. The Maps and Data link connects to another useful section: http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/mapsdata.htm
, which includes links to maps and data about everything from the annual
accident summary to historic bridges.
WSDOT
Library
The DOT Library is a good place to go to check for online access to
DOT Publications. A chart is posted which shows which documents are
available online and if they are in full-text. Links to electronic resources:

City of Seattle Department of Transportation
Geared a bit more toward the general citizen, there is more detailed
and technical information about city projects if you drill down into
the specific project link.

Professional
Associations
American Association of State
Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO)
An excellent source of technical information on the design, construction,
and maintenance of highways, and other transportation facilities. Membership
is only open to state transportation agencies. Non-members can order
publications and read the online AASHTO Journal. Meeting information
is available.
American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE)
This is the largest professional society for civil engineers. Their
website provides all of the information necessary for members to participate
in society functions including membership application forms, publications,
position announcements, and schedules of meetings. ASCE has recently
instituted a "Grants Development Program" which facilitates
fund seeking activities of its members. The UW Libraries has online
full-text access to all ASCE journals. Connect via the link in the Libraries
Catalog record for the particular journal.
Institute
of Transportation Engineers (ITE)
ITE is an association of transportation and traffic engineers, transportation
planners and other professionals who are responsible for meeting mobility
and safety needs. The web site provides information on job opportunities,
conferences, transportation news, and publications available for sale
from ITE.
Transportation
Research Board (TRB)
TRB is a unit of the National Research Council and National Academy
of Sciences. Its purpose is "to stimulate research concerning the
nature and performance of transportation systems, to disseminate the
information produced by the research, and to encourage the application
of appropriate research findings". The workings of the TRB are
diverse and include Technical Activities, Studies and Information Services
(i.e. policy reports), Cooperative Research Programs, and more. TRB
is the publisher of the Transportation Research Information Service
(TRIS); the foremost bibliographic database for transportation engineering.
