Fisheries-Oceanography Library

INTRODUCTION

How many salmon were caught in Washington State? How many fishing vessels are there in the world? What is the per capita consumption of fish in the United States? What were the imports/exports for a particular country or species? These are all the types of statistical questions that we hope this page will provide some guidance to possible sources.

A first place to start is the University of Washington Libraries Online Catalog. You can browse by subject heading e.g. FISHERIES--WASHINGTON-STATE--STATISTICS or FISHERIES--CANADA--STATISTICS and find relevant materials in the UW Libraries collections. You can also do a keyword search but be careful; FISHERIES AND STATISTICS would get you any item in the Fisheries-Oceanography Library that has the word statistics somewhere in the record as well as materials on fisheries statistics. Many countries produce "statistical handbooks" which are generally available at the UW Government Publication Division in Suzzallo Library.

Another good source for identifying statistical sources is the Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts which is available on the Web for UW faculty staff and students. There are subject descriptors specifically for fishery statistics and you can consult the ASFA thesaurus for these. Another option would be to do a keyword search; TUNA AND STATISTICS or THAILAND AND STATISTICS or AQUACULTURE AND STATISTICS. This will retrieve a list of potential references. You would need to check the UW Libraries Catalog to determine if the references were available on campus.

ABI/Inform has material on fishing statistics and industry. Also, Stat-USA, and Statistical Universe are worthwhile statistical resources.
