What does "GFIS" stand for?

"GFIS" stands for Grants and Funding Information Service, a service which provides help identifying funding sources to graduate students attending the University of Washington.

What is the mission of GFIS?

The Grants and Funding Information Service provides help identifying resources for external funding for graduate students (masters and doctoral level) who have been admitted to or who are attending the University of Washington. GFIS offers workshops and individual consultations explaining print and online resources available for students to search. GFIS does not provide search services for students, but rather provides guidance in learning searching skills and direction as to which materials might offer a better chance of finding a useful funding source.

What population does GFIS serve?

GFIS serves the University of Washington graduate student population, both at the masters and doctoral level. Students should be admitted to or attending the University of Washington or have a high probability of being admitted to a graduate program to use GFIS services. The Graduate Funding Information Manager is available during posted office hours for drop-in consultations for UW graduate students, or an appointment may be made via phone or e-mail. Print materials are available for graduate students, faculty, staff and the general public outside the GFIS office, as well as one computer with access to three funding databases. These are accessible during Suzzallo Library's posted hours.

Does GFIS serve University of Washington staff or faculty?

GFIS does not specifically serve the University of Washington staff or faculty, though the GFIS materials are available to anyone visiting Suzzallo Library. Faculty and staff should approach their departments or the Grants and Contract Services office for specific help in finding and understanding funding possibilities. Faculty and staff in the Health Sciences may contact the Research Funding Service at (206)685-8036 or rfs@u.washington.edu for more information about the services they provide.

Does GFIS serve anyone outside of the University of Washington?

The GFIS print materials and computer are available in Suzzallo Library during posted hours. The services of the Graduate Funding Information Manager are not available at length to anyone outside of the University of Washington graduate student population. However, information about funding possibilities are kept up-to-date on the GFIS website (http://www.lib.washington.edu/gfis/) and may be accessed by anyone with Internet access. People outside the University of Washington are encouraged to look through the GFIS website for funding possibilities and to print out the general GFIS bibliography (http://www.lib.washington.edu/gfis/resources/bibliography.html) as a way to begin a funding search.
