How do I use Google Scholar to search for UW materials?

What is Google Scholar?
Google Scholar is a search tool that identifies scholarly research materials. It currently is most useful in the sciences and health sciences. Google Scholar can be used to identify some of the articles in journals that the UW Libraries subscribes to. To find additional articles, use the research databases identified as most useful for your subject.
How will I know whether the UW has access to articles I find?
We recommend that you search Google Scholar via the UW Libraries. When you search Google Scholar this way you will automatically see the "Find UW Holdings" links and have access to articles already paid for by the Libraries.

How can I see "Find UW Holdings" links and access the fulltext of articles from off-campus? There are three ways:
1. Go to Google Scholar:
  1. Click on the "Scholar Preferences" link shown on the right of the search box.
  2. In the Library Links box, search for "University of Washington Libraries."
  3. Click the check-box beside "University of Washington Libraries (Find UW Holdings)" and then click "Save Preferences."
  4. Use the UW Libraries Proxy Bookmarklet to get the fulltext of the article.
2. Login to the UW Libraries proxy (use the off-campus access button) and access Google Scholar from a Libraries web page
3. Go to Google Scholar then use the UW Libraries Proxy Bookmarklet
What should I do if I don’t see a "Find UW Holdings" link for an article I want?
Google Scholar does not always know when the UW Libraries has a journal. Search the UW Libraries Catalog for the journal name to check if we have a printed or electronic version of the journal. For Health Sciences journals also check the HealthLinks ejournals page for other electronic access.
What should I do if I'm asked to pay for the full text?
Never pay for articles!
1. First check and see if there is a "Find UW Holdings" link. If there is one, use the UW Libraries Proxy Bookmarklet to link to the fulltext if connecting from off campus.
2. If there is no "Find UW Holdings" link, search the UW Libraries Catalog for the journal name to check if we have a printed or electronic version of the journal.
3. If the UW Libraries does not own the journal, current UW and Cascadia students, staff, and faculty may request it through Interlibrary Loan. UW-Seattle Health Sciences, Social Work, and Law School users may request it through their respective programs.
