Instruction Services FAQ

This FAQ provides answers to common questions dealing with booking an instruction workshop. For more information contact your subject librarian.
What type of workshop can be arranged for my class?
The UW Libraries provides a variety of options for customized library instruction. Instruction sessions can be tailored to:
  • class assignments
  • library databases
  • discipline-related resources

Do I need to attend the library workshop with my students?
Yes, faculty play an important and active role during library instruction sessions by emphasizing the importance of library research skills.

Is there an alternative to a formal library workshop?
If a customized library workshop is not possible for your class you can have students complete an online tutorial, Research 101 or attend general open workshops scheduled throughout the quarter.

When should library workshops be scheduled?
Library workshops should be scheduled when students are actively working on a research assignment. Students will find the workshop more relevant if they already have research topics.

Workshops can be scheduled throughout the quarter during regular library hours. Please request a workshop at least 2 weeks in advance to allow for preparation and access to an instruction room.

What is information literacy?
Information literacy is more than than just teaching students how to use the library. The goal of information literacy is to develop 21st century information and technology competencies and the skills for lifelong learning. Information literate students are able to find, evaluate and use information effectively to solve problems and make decisions. [CSU San Marcos]
