Abstract: Intraspecific differences in movement behaviour reflect different tactics used by individuals or sexes to favour strategies that maximize fitness. We report movement data collected from n = 23 adult male polar bears with novel ear-attached transmitters in two separate pack ice subpopulations over five breeding seasons. We compared movements with n = 26 concurrently tagged adult females, and analysed velocities, movement tortuosity, range sizes and habitat selection with respect to sex, reproductive status and body mass. There were no differences in 4-day displacements or sea ice habitat selection for sex or population. By contrast, adult females in all years and both populations had significantly more linear movements and significantly larger breeding range sizes than males. We hypothesized that differences were related to encounter rates, and used observed movement metrics to parametrize a simulation model of male-male and male-female encounter. The simulation showed that t! he more tortuous movement of males leads to significantly longer times to male-male encounter, while having little impact on male-female encounter. By contrast, linear movements of females are consistent with a prioritized search for sparsely distributed prey. These results suggest a possible mechanism for explaining the smaller breeding range sizes of some solitary male carnivores compared to females. |

Abstract: The parafermionic observable has recently been used by number of authors to study discrete models, believed to be conformally invariant and to prove convergence results for these processes to SLE (Beffara and Duminil-Copin in arXiv:1010.0526v2, 2011; Duminil-Copin and Smirnov in arXiv:1007.0575v2, 2011; Hongler and Smirnov in arXiv:1008.2645v3, 2011; Ikhlef and Cardy in J. Phys. A 42:102001, 2009; Lawler in preprint, 2011; Rajabpour and Cardy in J. Phys. A 40:14703, 2007; Riva and Cardy in J. Stat. Mech. Theory Exp., 2006; Smirnov in International Congress of Mathematicians, vol. II, pp. 1421-1451, 2006; Smirnov in Ann. Math. 172(2):1435-1467, 2010; Smirnov in Proceedings of the International Congress of Mathematicians, Hyderabad 2010, vol. I, pp. 595-621, 2010). We provide a definition for a one parameter family of continuum versions of the parafermionic observable for SLE, which takes the form of a normalized limit of expressions identical to the discrete definition. We th! en show the limit defining the observable exists, compute the value of the observable up to a finite multiplicative constant, and prove this constant is non-zero for a wide range of.. Finally, we show our observable for SLE becomes a holomorphic function for a particular choice of the parameter, which provides a new point of view on a fundamental property of the discrete observable. |

Abstract: In the United States, Blacks are disproportionately impacted by HIV/AIDS. Sexual networks and concurrent relationships have emerged as important contributors to the heterosexual transmission of HIV. To date, Africa is the only continent where an understanding of the impact of sexual concurrency has been conveyed in HIV prevention messaging. This project was developed by researchers and members of the Seattle, Washington, African American and African-Born communities, using the principles of community-based participatory research (CBPR). Interest in developing concurrency messaging came from the community and resulted in the successful submission of a community academic partnership proposal to develop and disseminate HIV prevention messaging around concurrency. The authors describe (a) the development of concurrency messaging through the integration of collected formative data and findings from the scientific literature; (b) the process of disseminating the message in the loc! al Black community; and (c) important factors to consider in the development of similar campaigns. |

Title: PARALLEL TRACTOR EXTENSION AND AMBIENT METRICS OF HOLONOMY SPLIT G(2) |

Abstract: The holonomy of the ambient metrics of Nurowski's conformal structures associated to generic real-analytic 2-plane fields on oriented 5-manifolds is investigated. It is shown that the holonomy is always contained in the split real form G(2) of the exceptional Lie group, and is equal to G(2) for an open dense set of 2-plane fields given by explicit conditions. In particular, this gives an infinite-dimensional family of metrics of holonomy equal to split G(2). These results generalize work of Leistner-Nurowski. The inclusion of the holonomy in G(2) is established by proving an ambient extension theorem for parallel tractors in the context of conformal geometry in general signature and dimension, which is expected to be of independent interest. |
