First time using media in your class? Media can be a great way to raise interest, provoke discussion, increase understanding of a topic, and introduce or conclude a unit of study. Here are some general suggestions to consider before showing a film in class.
Who can schedule Media Center materials?
UW instructors may request to use media materials for a specific date. This ensures that the video will be available for use in the classroom on the date needed.
How do I schedule an item?
Please request items at least 5 days before the date needed to help ensure availability. Items will be pulled from our shelves and held under your name for you to check out and take to class. Bothell and Tacoma items require 3-5 weekdays to arrive once they are requested.
There are 3 ways to make your request:

What are course reserves?
Instructors may place media items, such as videotapes, DVDs, and audio recordings, on reserve for students to view in the library. Instructors' personal copies may be placed on reserve at the owner's risk. If not retrieved at the end of the quarter, personal copies will be returned via campus mail.
Reserves generally check-out for 2 or 4 hour loan and are in-library use only. This way a greater number of students can use them in a shorter amount of time. You may also request to place items on a 24 hour circulating reserve. Please note that while items on reserve may still be checked out by other faculty members.
How do I place items on course reserve?
If you would like to suggest an item be added to the Media Center's collections, use the online Purchase Request Form. Please indicate whether the item is to be used in a course and how soon the item is needed.
To browse catalogs of films and documentaries available for purchase, see the list of commonly used Media Distributors.
If you have questions about media selection, or need assistance locating materials not already in the collection, contact medialib@u.washington.edu. We can work with you to find films which support your particular course. The Media Selector reviews all requests and makes purchase decisions based on the UW Libraries Media Center Collection Development Policy.
The UW Libraries Media Center is pleased to offer UW instructors access to a free Netflix DVD rental service. This service will augment our permanent collections by offering access to titles we do not currently own, faster access to popular titles we do own, and the opportunity to preview titles before requesting they be purchased by the Libraries. If you have any questions about this service, please contact the Media Center at 206-543-6051 or email us.
Faculty from other UW campuses who would like to use materials from the UW Seattle Media Center should contact their local media center. The UW Bothell Campus Media Center or UW Tacoma Library Media Center staff members will coordinate the exchange of items. Faculty are also welcome to come to the Odegaard Undergraduate Library on the Seattle Campus to check out media center items in person.
