Streaming Course Reserves

As part of its mission to support instruction and research at the University of Washington, the Libraries offers UW instructors a streaming audio and video course reserves service. This service enables students to access a selection of their required audio and video course reserve titles from computers located on one of UW's threee campuses.

How to Submit a Streaming Reserve Request

In order for an audio or video title to qualify for the streaming service, certain preconditions need to be met:

  • The request is made by a University of Washington instructor for his/her credit bearing, degree program affiliated course;
  • The request is made for titles that are being taught in the instructor’s course and are identified as required viewing or listening by that instructor;
  • The request is made 4 weeks prior to the beginning of the quarter in which it is needed;
  • The instructor or the Libraries own a legally attained original. For those copies provided by the instructor, the Libraries will make a good faith effort to purchase a commercially available copy for its permanent collections.

If these preconditions are met, instructors then submit a request by going to the following form: http://tinyurl.com/uw-streaming

How to Access Streaming Reserves

In order to access streaming media reserves, you must:

  • Be a current UW student with a valid UWNetID.
  • Enter a class password provided to you by your instructor.

You will also need a free Quicktime player to access streaming audio and video reserves. If you don't have a Quicktime player (*latest version strongly recommended*) installed on your computer you can download a free version here.

Note: streaming reserves are intended for on-campus use only.

If you are having any technical difficulties accessing the streaming media reserves online, hard copies of all media reserves should be available for viewing at the Media Center in Odegaard Undergraduate Library.

Despite our best efforts to make this service as seamless as possible, users do occasionally experience some difficulties in accessing streaming media reserves. See below for a description of some of the more common problems and error messages, followed by explanations of their possible causes.

Quicktime 7.6 for Windows: No image, intermittent video and/or audio drop-out
PC users using Quicktime Player 7.6 or later will need to 1) go to the Quicktime "Edit" menu, 2) select Preferences, 3) then select "Quicktime Preferences", 4) go to the "Advanced" tab, and 5) then under "Video" select "Safe Mode (GDI only)." Close and reopen Quicktime. Streaming video reserves should now function properly.

"Live Broadcast Paused", "Error 403: Forbidden" and/or audio drop-out
If you receive these error messages or experience audio dropout the problem could be caused by one of three issues:
1) The firewall on your personal computer blocking access to the stream. You must configure your firewall to allow the Quicktime Player to communicate with the Internet. Consult the manufacturer of your firewall software if you are unsure how to grant this access.
2) You may have paused the stream for more than one minute. Paused streams timeout after 60 seconds of inactivity.
3) Your connection speed and/or the capacity of your computer's CPU may be too limited to access streaming reserves. If your firewall is configured correctly and your are not pausing the streams for more than 60 seconds, we recommend you try accessing your streaming reserves from one of the Libraries' computers.

"Error 404: No found"
If you receive this error message please try back in a few minutes. If the problem persists please let us know. See "Ask Us" below for contact information.

"Error 461: Unsupported Transport"
If you receive this message you may be trying to open the stream with a player other than the Quicktime Player (e.g. RealPlayer). Streaming reserves should be accessed with the latest free version of the Quicktime Player.

Blank browser windows and dialog boxes
When launching streams from certain browsers a dialog box and blank browser window appear. Click "cancel" to remove the dialog box and then close the blank browser window.
