The Music Library contains over 65,000 books and scores, 45,000 recordings and other media including video tapes and computer software, and current subscriptions to approximately 300 periodicals. Subjects covered include acoustics and physics of music, ethnomusicology, jazz, music education, and the history, literature, theory and performance of music.
Dewey Decimal scores and Library of Congress scores and books with call numbers through ML 429 are shelved in open stacks on the first floor. Library of Congress numbers ML 430 through Z, oversize materials, and periodicals are located on the ground floor. Periodicals are shelved in alphabetical order by title.
Special collections include the Hazel G. Kinscella Collection of early American Hymnals and tune books, a collection of early opera scores, the Offenbacher Mozart Collection of early recordings of the vocal music of Mozart, and The Melvin Harris Collection of early recordings of performances on wind instruments. There are tape performances conducted by Milton Katims. Additionally, in the Special Collections Division, there are the marked conductor scores of Milton Katims and Vilem Sokol and marked performance parts from the Soni Ventorum woodwind quintet.
