Why would I want to use an article instead of something else? When do I need to look for articles? Examining the articles related to a particular topic offers a sense of what is being talked about, or researched, on a subject around the time of publication; if you want to know where the current research stands regarding Beethoven’s terminal illness and the research on his hair, it would be a good idea to find the most recent articles about that topic first rather than looking for a book about it. If you want to know what was researched around the time of Bach’s birth tricentennial, try finding articles written around that time. It is also a good indication of who is presently doing research on a topic. If you are looking for an in-depth treatment of a very specific subject, an article or several articles will usually work better than a book or encyclopedia. Articles are better suited to focused analyses of this kind. |
