What are books? What am I going to find in a book? Books are the result of in-depth studies of a particular
topic. They usually constitute definitive works on a topic and are intended
to be comprehensive. Publishing a monograph, or a book by one author,
is a long and challenging process, and usually books are published months
or years after the initial research was done. As such, even a new book
can go out of date quickly in “volatile” subject areas where
research changes directions very quickly. Usually in those subject areas
authors will wait until the research dies down before publishing a book,
choosing instead to publish shorter articles related to particular research
topics. |

Books are either the result of one person’s lengthy research process, or a combination of research by several people or by an organization. Books that are made up of chapters written by different people are called symposiums. |
