Why use books? What reason might I have to use a book rather than something else?

If you are looking for a definitive work on your research topic, a book (or more than one book) is likely what you’ll look for first. Even though there may be more recent research available in articles, finding books on a topic indicates that there has been a large amount of research done and that the time was taken to produce an authoritative resource.

Browsing books on a topic offers a good indication of who is (and/or was) doing the in-depth research on the topic, since usually someone will not publish a book until he or she has completed a very thorough research process.
