Dr Yi Yi was born on 14 March 1929 in Thantwe, Rakhine
State. She was the only daughter of U Ba Sein, a Divisional Commissioner,
and Daw Zaing. Her education started in Sittwe Convent in 1935 and passed
her Matriculation Examination in 1946. She obtained the First class B.A.
(Hon' ours) Degree in History in 1952 and in the same year proceeded to
England as a State Scholar and Studied at the School of the Oriental and
African Studies. She obtained the Ph.D. Degree in 1958. On 1959 she joined the Burma Historical Commission as a Research
Officer and in 1963 was promoted as a Senior Research officer. She was
specially assigned to work on the Konbaung period (1752-1885) of the Myanmar
History. She served in that capacity for nearly 26 years and passed away
while still in service. She had also worked as a part time lecturer in
Department of History, Yangon University. She was awarded the 1975 National Literary Award for Non-fiction
literature (Arts) for her book entitled Myanmar Naing ngan A che Aney
(1714-1752). She died on 15 November 1984. |
