INDEX KEWENSIS

• "Hort." ("hortorum" or "hortulanorum") from entries in early volumes denotes cultivated taxa. Cultivars are no longer included in IKew.

• Some geographic locations may be abbreviated in Latin. For help with this, refer to the "Geographical Names" chapter in Botanical Latin located in the Natural Sciences Reference Area: QK 10 .S7 1992.

  Some of the frequently used abbreviations include:

  austr. = southern (australis) occ. = western (occidentalis)
  bor. = northern (borealis) or.= eastern (orientalis)

• Errors occur in the Publications, Notes and Species fields because a machine was used to convert the printed version of IKew into machine-readable form. Some records don't fall into their appropriate fields.

• The word "RE-ENTRY" is used to indicate that a correction was made to update the original record. Another example of a correction is the message "{corrected when edited for database}".

• Records with the prefix "a" mean they are new records created to replace unreadable records from the 2-volume addenda and Supplements I and II.

• The abbreviation "Illus." is added to a record in the NOTES field to indicate that an illustration accompanies the plant description (in the published work).
