Instructions for Researching Cited References

OPENING THE DATABASE

  1. Open the UW Libraries Homepage (http://www.lib.washington.edu)
  2. Under Resources," Click on "Research Databases."
  3. Click on "Web of Science," the last database listed in the "Starting points for research in most subjects" section.

LOGGING INTO WEB OF SCIENCE - SCIENCE CITATION INDEX

From the ISI Web of Knowledge page:
  1. Select the "Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-EXPANDED) -- 1980--present" box.
  2. Click on the dates you would like to search, or leave the default selected (All years).
  3. Click on the Cited Reference Search box.

STEP 1: CITED REFERENCE SEARCH

SEARCHING

(This is where you search for the original author and/or article)

1.  Fill in the appropriate boxes. It is often best to start with cited author only.

Example:

NOTES
CITED AUTHOR kruckeberg ar Not case sensitive; use only initials, no full names and no punctuation. If unsure, use wildcard symbol * (e.g. kruck*)
CITED WORK syst bot For journals, use abbreviated journal title. To find the abbreviation, click on list. (If unsuccessful, use the wildcard symbol * (e.g. sys* bo*)
CITED YEAR 1996 or 1997 Enter one or more 4-digit years

2.  Click on the grey search box.


STEP 2: CITED REFERENCE SELECTION

LOOKING AT RESULTS

Most articles dating earlier than 1970, or articles not indexed in Science Citation Index will not be included in your results.

Each line represents an article that matched your search terms, and lists how many times each article was cited (how many "hits").

To see information for the original article, click on the View Record.

To see the names of the articles that cited the original, check the box(es) to the left of the article title, and click on the Finish Search (1K).

PRINTING, SAVING, EXPORTING AND E-MAILING REFERENCES

From the "Search Results-Summary" screen,

  1. To see the abstract and/or cited references for one record at a time, click the underlined link.

  2. To print, save, export or e-mail one or more record at a time, do the following:
      a) Check the boxes on the records you want to print, save or export

      b) Click the grey submit) box in the navigation box on the right side of the screen to Submit the Marks.

      c) At the top of the page, click the Marked List box.

      d) There are 4 options (shown in the boxes below)to choose from to manage your results. The articles will be formatted to automatically include author, article title and source. If you want additional fields check the appropriate boxes.

      Choose the option you want to use and follow the instructions given.

    ELIMINATING SELF-CITATIONS

    1. Perform a Cited Reference Search for an author, following the above instructions. Select all of the results, and then click on the finishsr (1K) button at the top of the page.
    2. Next do a General Search for the same author, by clicking on the gensrch (1K) button.
    3. Click the advanced (1K) button, then at the Advanced Search page, combine the two searches by entering, #1 NOT #2, in the Search box, then clicking the grey search (1K) button. This Boolean "NOT" search will eliminate the articles in which the author has cited his own articles.
