Gaming in Odegaard Learning Commons

photo of students using technologyThe Odegaard Learning Commons is experiencing higher than normal gaming activity. In response to numerous complaints by students unable to access a computer to complete their academic work, a new policy is being implemented on a test basis:

Effective May 1, 2012: Gaming is prohibited on computers in Odegaard Library from 9 am to 6 pm daily.

 

Please note:

  • This is a policy from University of Washington Information Technology (UW-IT) and Odegaard Library, and went into effect during Spring Quarter 2012.
  • During all hours, current policies that give academic work the highest priority and restrict activities that are disruptive to other patrons remain in effect.

In reaching this decision, UW-IT and UW Libraries consulted with the UW Attorney General’s office, the Student Technology Fee Committee, and the UW Library Student Advisory Committee. First and foremost, the Odegaard Learning Commons is a place for all UW students to study and to do their work. If students need to game for academic purposes, they will be directed to a lab in the department issuing the course-related activity.

Use of computer equipment for recreational purposes such as game playing deters others from using workstations for educational or research purposes, and otherwise makes the Libraries less conducive to study. Libraries may intervene to ensure optimal access to computers for educational and research purposes.
