Answers to recent questions about access to ScienceDirect.com Physics & Astronomy Journals:

Q: Why can't I access the ScienceDirect article I want? 

A: ScienceDirect journal web pages show articles available back to vol.1,
BUT FOR THE UW, ACCESS TO FULL ARTICLES OF SCIENCEDIRECT JOURNALS GOES
BACK ONLY TO 1995, AND ONLY FOR SUBSCRIBED JOURNALS (listed below**).
Only journal issues which display ScienceDirect's green "subscribed" icon
on the journal's homepage are available to the UW.


Q: Why don't we have electronic access to issues before 1995?

A: Our ScienceDirect contract with Elsevier only includes articles back
through 1995. Elsevier does NOT have the option, as do APS & OSA, of an
annual access fee to the backfiles.  Elsevier requires a one-time purchase
of $109,000 for access to their pre-1995 physics & astronomy journals. The
Library cannot afford such a huge fee, especially when many of the volumes
are already available in print at the UW. If you want electronic access to
the backfiles, put pressure on Elsevier to make other less costly options
available.


Q: What are the alternatives to electronic access?

A: Check the Libraries' Online Catalog (by journal title) for
availability of print issues. If older issues are in storage in Auxiliary
Stacks, click on the "Request" button in the upper right of the Catalog
record and follow the directions to obtain the volume.

Journal articles not available in print anywhere at the UW (and not
available to UW electronically), can be obtained by UW faculty and
students for free through the Science Libraries Request Form
(http://www.lib.washington.edu/engineering/docdel.html) or through UWorld
Express (http://www.lib.washington.edu/uworld).
