Library Research Award for Undergraduates

2010 Award Application Procedure for Groups

All undergraduate students enrolled at the University of Washington are encouraged to submit research projects for the award competition.

If you are planning to apply for the Library Research Award for Undergraduates be aware that it is a 3-step process. You should complete step one before the award deadline of May 17, 2010, since it may take several days to get your UW NetID added to the Award's Collect It dropbox.

The requirements for submitting group projects are slightly different than those for individual projects. Each member of the group must submit a separate application form and essay. Your group will be asked to select one group member to act as the coordinator of your project submission. That individual will be responsible for submitting all your group's documents, including each member's essay, to the Collect It dropbox.

  1. Step one: Fill out the 2010 Award Application Form. Each member of the group must fill out a separate application. Your group's coordinator will be notified once his or her UW NetID has been added to the Award's Collect It dropbox. This will enable you to submit your application to the dropbox.

  2. Step two: Have your instructor submit a letter of support to libaward@u.washington.edu. See: [Faculty Support Letter Guidelines].

  3. Step three: Have your group coordinator submit your project files (Word document, pdf, PowerPoint presentation, DVD/CD, Web sites, etc.) to the Collect It dropbox. Recommended reading: Instructions for using Collect It.

In order to streamline the judging process and ensure fast turnaround of the award submissions for faculty evaluators, we require that the components described below be submitted as separate files. Your award application will consist of 5 separate parts (plus the faculty letter), each submitted as a separate assignment in the Collect It dropbox. Note: Your application can be submitted in parts at any time up to the deadline.

If you experience problems with the process, contact: libaward@u.washington.edu

Your submission will include 5 separate parts:

  • A completed 2010 Research Award Cover Sheet (a fill-in Word form, group project version)

  • An abstract/summary of the project, no longer than 150 words.

  • A 750-1,000 word reflective essay describing your research strategies, and use of library tools and resources. Each member of a group project must write an individual essay. The essay is one of the most important parts of your application! Please see the [essay guidelines] and [tips from past evaluators]

  • A final version of the research project. Projects in all media formats are encouraged.

  • A bibliography or other appropriate listing of sources consulted. [bibliography tips]

PLUS a letter of support from the instructor who supervised your project (submitted separately by the faculty member to libaward@u.washington.edu - see Step 2 above.)

Other project formats: consult with the Library Research Award Task Force, libaward@u.washington.edu, to determine the appropriate components and format of project submissions. Arrangements must be made before the award deadline of 5 p.m. on May 17.

INCOMPLETE applications will not be accepted.

Deadline: Monday, 5:00 p.m., May 17, 2010.

Plan ahead! The Collect It dropbox will stop accepting submissions precisely at 5:00 p.m.
