Kathleen spoke to PCLS not providing instruction, but referring college/university students back to their school of origin for reference/research support because the public library does not have what they are looking for. Students are seeking primarily textbooks to avoid purchase price. Online students are having a big impact on public libraries as they expect the public library to have the material they need for their college coursework.
Round Robin – Advice for working with young adult (aged 18 – 22) patrons
Anna opened the conversation by announcing that the UWT has so far accepted 172 freshmen; up to 180 will be accepted.
Attendees shared stories, concerns, and considerations for working with this age group:
- Often over-confident, but under-information literate
- Rely heavily on online sources
- Unfamiliar with how to navigate print sources
- Helpful to have faculty require that students use a mix of print and (reliable) electronic sources
- Probably, students/patrons in this age group need help with web evaluation
- Often prefer to study in groups
- Recommended orientation to “library culture” (e.g., online poker gaming and cell-phone shrieking)
- Recommended partnering with Student Services to help send a consistent “proper college behavior” message to students
- Recommended giving students library assignments to “report back” to the librarian; younger students often work harder when they’re held immediately accountable
The UWT librarians thanked all attendees for their input and discussion, and suggested that any other ideas or thoughts be emailed to Anna.
Focus over summer
Anna suggested that some of the items we might include on our “Visitor Information” web page include:
- Links to our libraries
- Information about how our patrons can remotely access our databases
- Operating hours
- Library policies
- Others? We agreed to think about this over the summer.
We also discussed needing to come up with a cool logo and branding statement – everyone is encouraged to be creative!
Future topics
Ideas for future meeting discussions include:
- Co-sponsoring workshops with the State Library
- UW project to digitize newspaper holdings
- Should we appoint a membership officer/membership committee to continue to add to our ranks?
Announcements

Rachel Goon
