South Sound Librarians
Meeting Notes
May 16, 2007
State Library – Tumwater

Attendees: Br. Peter Tynan (St. Martin’s), Kathleen Wolf (PCLS), David (PCLS), Brenda Philip (GRCC), Jennifer Sundheim (UWT), Carole Svensson (UWT), Anna Salyer (UWT), Serin Anderson (UWT), Erica Coe (UWT), Melissa Dunn (WSL), Rachel Goon (TCC).
Thank you to the librarians and staff at the State Library for hosting, and providing tasty treats! The meeting began with a tour of the state library facilities from Steve Willis. This was followed by a welcome from the State Librarian, Jan Walsh. We also were treated to introductions to specialized offices under the aegis of the State Library. Elizabeth Jahnke spoke to us about working in state correctional facility libraries; Bruce West gave us an overview of the Labor & Industries Library; Lori Thornton oriented us to the Public Services office; and Will Stuivenga updated us on the statewide catalog project.

Old Business:
Anna reported that 6 of us attended the February meeting at UW Seattle, which combined a business meeting with a trip to the Suzzallo basement to “shop” for gift books. She reminded us that we can contact Carolyn Aamot any time, if we want to take from their free books for our collections. Anna also reminded us to send our “Gift Referral” profiles to Jennifer Sundheim.

New Business:
1) The group held elections to fill officer positions that will be vacated in the fall. The election results: Jennifer Sundheim, president-elect
Melissa Dunn volunteered, and was confirmed, for the position of recorder
Serin Anderson volunteered, and was confirmed, for the position of vice president-elect.

2) Anna announced that the UWT Library would like to hold a workshop this summer, to train others to search the Foundation Directory that the UW has access to. We should email Anna (anna3@u.washington.edu) with good dates and times for a summer training.

3) Anna announced that she is the VP/President-elect or ACRL-WA (congratulations!). ACRL-WA is extending an invitation to all South Sound librarians to attend their conference at Pac Forest on 10/25 & 10/26. Of particular interest is a library-marketing workshop, entitled “The Visible Librarian.” Registration is open, and will be about $110.

Announcements
Brother Peter announced that he is going to Mount Angel to resume his seminary studies (congratulations to him). This will open two library positions at St. Martin’s. Kathleen Wolf offered to host our next meeting in October at the South Hill branch of PCLS – more info to follow.

Respectfully submitted,
Rachel Goon
