Meeting Notes
October 12, 2006
St. Martin's College
Present: Mary Mara (CityU), Kathleen Wolf (PCLS, Beverly (PCLS) , Vicky Raphael (CityU), Sue Schub (Brenda Phillip (GRCC), Russell (SPSCC), Jennifer Sundheim (UWT), Rachel Goon (TCC), Brother Peter ( St. Martin ’s), Melissa & Beth (State Library), Scot Harrison ( St. Martin ’s), Anna Salyer (UWT)
(my apologies for not catching everyone’s last names!)
Anna opened the meeting by reminding everyone to send their IL plans to Carole Svensson . Also, the Gifts Referral page is quite empty – feel free to submit via the form online at the South Sound Librarians website: http://www.lib.washington.edu/soundlibrarians/
II. Free books from Carolyn Aamot at UW Seattle, we might plan a field trip one day?
a. Kathleen mentioned that public libraries probably don’t need to add to their collection, but could they sell books from Carolyn Aamot’s overflow? No, unfortunately.
III. Brother Peter moved to approve the May minutes, seconded by Jennifer Sundheim, and approved.
IV.. Anna mentioned that they are setting up a form online to make it easier for participating libraries to post their visitor services on the SSL site. The group has reached 44 members – Anna distributed a membership list.
V.. UW Tacoma’s new Freshmen!
- 177 new freshmen, so far, so good.
- Anna discussed the new UWT orientation, and the revamped library orientation
- Jennifer reported on the Freshman Cohort Librarian experience
VI. South Sound Librarians Logo
- Drawing a blank! Anna suggests blue/green/grey, related to being in the Sound region.
- Jennifer suggested opening it to a contest.
- Brother Peter suggests SSL as a starter
- Think of ideas, simple is good!
VII. Membership Fees
- Anna looked at the ALA site for tips on how, when, and why to collect dues
- Do we want to collect dues before we know what we’d spend them on? Does our mission statement give us any ideas about what we’d spend dues on?
- Brenda suggested that dues might not be appropriate at this time, since some people can only come once a year; dues would have to be small enough that managing them might not be worthwhile.
- Russ mentioned that if our goal is to grow the group, dues may not be desirable at the moment.
- Elections of new officers
- Still 2 year terms, with nominations in April and elections in May
- Electronic/anonymous voting?
- Anna will post position descriptions
- Decided – we will just ask for volunteers to take over the officer positions next spring. If there are multiple volunteers, then we can elect.
- Should we replace Mary Mara as VP now, since she is leaving the group?
VIII. Grants databases workshop
- Carole Svensson may run a workshop in Jan
IX. Other announcements
- Kathleen Wolf – Pierce Co is expanding its hours, and adding Reference/Children’s Librarian positions (mostly PT)
- Next meeting at the State Library?
Thanks again to Brother Peter and Scot Harrison for hosting us at St. Martin ’s, and for touring us around their beautiful lilbrary!
Respectfully submitted,
Rachel Goon
