This work, by a Thai scholar who has been trained both as a lawyer and a social anthropologist, has become the major source for understanding "traditional" Thai society as it existed in the 19th century. The study is based primarily on Thai legal documents which has led the author to somewhat idealize the character of traditional society. At the same time he has depicted well the ideological basis of that society.

Akin's work is a pioneering study of an urban neighborhood in Bangkok, based on fieldwork carried out in 1968-1970. The neighborhood studied was populated primarily by low-income people whose social characteristics were similar to those of villagers (chaoban). Akin describes the networks of relationships in which people in the neighborhood are emeshed and gives particular attention to the patronage role played by some in the neighborhood.

A good guide to anthropological andother social science research carried out in Thailand prior to the mid-1960s. This work also contains an essay which examines the various theoretical (or non-theoretical) bases for interpretation of Thai culture andsociety which inform the studies arising from these researches. While the discussion of the state of ethnographic research has been up-dated in C. F. Keyes "Ethnography and Anthropological Interpretation in the Study of Thailand" (1978), there still needs to be an up-dating of the bibliography of social sciences.
"631 books and periodical articles, mostly in English, but with a few in Thai and French. Most entries are not annotated. The bibliography is arranged in three sections. The first is divided topically, covering geograph, history, people, economy, social organization, religion, education and government. The second is a list arranged alphabetically by author, giving full citations for the materials listed topically under the firstsection, with a few annotations. The third section evaluates the materials from the standpoint of the social sciences" (Nunn 1971:102).

Lamai is identified as having an M.A. from Dublin and being a professor of Western languages in the Faculty of Humanities, Srinakarinwirote University, Pathumwan campus. Lamai says of the author of ‘Khon Thai Thing Phaendin’ must have been a child of a Tai leader who had migrated to Thailand. The book is a novelistic account of the Tai who in ancient times had lived in what became China and had been driven out of their original homeland by the Chinese.

Phya Anuman was the doyen of Thai cultural studies until the 1960s's. His article, "The Life of the Thai Farmer," contained in this collection should be read as a complement to the anthropological studies of Thai rural life. His second article on "Popular Buddhism in Thailand" represents an important contribution to the study of popular religion in Thailand. The third article, "Customs Connected with birth and Raising of Children," provides a folklorist complement to studies of child-rearing made by psychological anthropologists.

Ayal, an American-trained Israeli economist, is critical of optimistic accounts of Thai economic development. He notes that the traditional obstacles of "underdeveloped" skills and knowledge, preference for Thai over aliens, and political favoritism, remain hindrances to development and he concludes that Thailand will have to abandon her "rice-economy" and adopt modern attitudes and methods in order to begin development in earnest.

"This excellent empirical study develops a model of the Nerlovian type for the supply response in underdeveloped agriculture. The total supply response model is then applied to Thailand's four annual crops - rice, cassava, corn, and kenaf. Data employed is at the changwad level of aggregation; the marketed supply model is applied only in the case of rice, using nationally aggregated data. The estimates obtained suggest that Thai farmers 'respond significantly and substantially' to variables influencing income and risk. the response to price changes was found to be remarkable. Includes an extensive bibliography" (Thrombley & Siffin 1972:60).

A Marxist critique that argues that Thai studies in the U.S. has been the handmaiden to imperialism and has served to reinforce the dominance of the Thai ruling class. A general impressionistic study of Thai culture "at a distance." Benedict draws on her interest in culture and personality to elucidate some of the salient features of Thai behavior. This study, although based primarily on sources in Western languages and on a few interviews with Thai in the U.S. has been very influential in studies of Thailand. Benedict was one of the founders of the field of culture and personality (psychological anthropology) and brought this approach to her interpretation of Thai social behavior. She argues in this work that such fundamental Thai values as enjoyment of life, maintaining a cool heart, and male dominance are given expression in Buddhist beliefs and are established through patterns of child socialization.

Draws on chronicles and other sources (Thai and western-language) in surveying the knowledge about the relationships of various Tai-speaking peoples to each other and to their predecessors in Southeast Asia. Covers much the same ground as does Jit Poumisak, but the interpretation in this work is much more that of an expansionist Thai nationalism. Useful for bringing together chronicle materials in a single work, but is not very satisfactory in providing a guide to the sources of this information.
