A rather useful complement to Tej Bunnag's study, "The Provincial Administration of Siam from 1892 to 1915," in that it covers the reforms in the Ministry of Interior which were associated with the reforms in provincial administration. Based primarily on published sources rather than on archival materials and, thus, not as useful as Tej's work in providing a guide to archival materials. Contains a bibliography of materials in both Thai and Western languages and includes a number of documents in appendices. Lists about 200 items.

An interpretive history of the early Siamese kingdoms of Ayutthaya. Places historical events in the context of Siamese notions of history and cosmology. This work is a basic source for the history of early Ayutthaya. It is also an important source for Thai historiography in that it involves a reassessment of chronicles which heretofore have been dismissed by Westerners and Western-trained Thai historians as being impossible to use for historical purposes. Contains a good bibliography, with annotations of the chronicles and listing of Thai and Western-language secondary sources.

First written in about 1952. This work has had a great impact on contemporary Thai historiography both because it involves an effort to rethink the fundamental bases of Thai nationalism with reference to the relationships between Thai and other peoples in the area and because the author was a leading intellectual in the Communist-led insurgency. Cit Phumisak, after being a student at Chulalongkorn University, was imprisoned between 1958 and 1964 for anti-government activities. On release, he joined the insurgency in the jungle and was killed in 1965 at the age of 36.

This volume was originally written in Thai and distributed by Prince Damrong at the cremation of his mother in 1926. It remains, despite its datedness, an important introduction to the history of Buddhism and Archaeology in Thailand. This essay has probably been cited more times than has any other work on Thailand written by an anthropologist. Although based upon impressionistic observations rather than on intensive fieldwork, Embree's conclusion that Thai culture is a "loosely structured" one in which "considerable variation of individual behavior is sanctioned" has been the subject of considerable debate among anthropologists who have carried out more intensive studies in Thailand. The characterization has also been employed in interpreting other societies in Southeast Asia and even such non-Southeast Asian societies as those of Papua New Guinea. As much of the debate has turned on misrepresentations of Embree's argument, it is worth reading the original.

One of the very few studies to consider the bases for class stratification of Thai society. The study is, however, quite dated in terms both of the research on which it is based and the theory of stratification it employs.

This volume includes nine essays and an introduction by anthropologists and sociologists who discuss the utility of Embree's characterization of Thai culture as "loosely structured" for the interpretation of ethnography and behavioral data collected in Thailand. The volume includes a reprinted version of Embree's article, plus original contributions by J.A. Niels Mulder, Herbert P. Phillips, A. Thomas Kirsch, Steven Piker, Boonsanong Punyodyana, Clark E. Cunningham, Hans-Dieter Evers, and Michael Moerman. Some of the contributors (notably Phillips and Piker) give greater stress to the fluidity o
