A most stimulating article on the interconnections of Buddhist worldview and conceptions of power in Thai society (both traditional and contemporary). In this paper, Hanks argues that Thai society is ordered with reference to Buddhist cosmological conceptions of a moral hierarchy. However, there is a high degree of fluidity in Thai society because people's places on the hierarchy change according to what they see as being an unknown karmic destiny and because they sometimes seek power which "blurs the edges of cosmic justice."
