A study based primarily on the first-hand observations made by Wales, who had been trained as an anthropologist, of royal rites performed during the reign of King Vajiravudh (1910-1924). Wales also drew heavily on "The Royal Cermonies of the Twelve Months," a work written by King Chulalongkorn. Wales' study is useful for understanding the "Hindu" influences in court rituals as well as for the sources of some royal rites still performed today.

Discusses the Thai notions of how lives are ordered by plantetary deities (devata). ". . . In this erudite work the author discusses the subject in full, considering the question of present-day credibility of the traditional divination as exemplified by educated people in Bangkok. It throws light on Thai beliefs and practices and the influence of the supernatural on the Thai people as they stand alone on one border of the free world, facing a destiny that may be the most critical in their history. This book makes a valuable contribution both to spiritual understanding and to anthropological research." (from prospectus)

At the same time it has intensified the social class differentiation, the pauperization and proletarianization of the peasntry and the dependence of large number of small producers on the capitalist market, credit and loans which compelled them to become subject to capital even though they are not formally separated from the means of production (land)." "... An anthropological study of the Thai political elite -- persons who were, in the past quarter of a century, in positions of leadership. The term "elite" used in this study refers to the upper stratum of society, nominally containing certain groups of people, not necessarily sharply defined, who are in a position to control, influence, and exercise political power and make decisions having major consequences.
The field research upon which this study is based was carried out in Bangkok during ... 1983 to ... 1985. Approximately fourteen to ranking national political figures, including five former prime ministers, three former deputy prime ministers, and six eminent cabinet ministers who held political offices between 1950 to 1976 were contacted, and collection of detailed life histories and self-evaluations of these individuals, including their families and associates, were made by means of interviews. All these informants were, by the time of field research, fully retired from any 'direct' political involvement.
This study discusses the conception of power and political order in traditional Thai society. It briefly outlines the historical development of modern Thai politics and examines the decline of the traditional political belief system. The life histories of five influential political figures of modern Thai politics are presented in the text, and personality attributes of the Thai political elite are examined. Finally, this study analyzes the relationship between some aspects of socialization and power motivation, it also discusses the nature of leadership, emotional relationships, and the structure of political groupings in contemporary Thai society."
