Guides to Microform Collections

Access Note

The Libraries has many sets of micopublished materials which do not appear in the catalog as individual titles. A card file and a Microform Sets Guide Database are available in the Microforms/ Newspapers Division to assist readers in finding these materials.

Some of the most important sets for research on Southeast Asia include archival collections, particularly those relating to the Viet Nam War. These are described in the Bibliographic Subject Guides page.

Micropublishing and Southeast Asia

Micropublishing is an increasingly important information source for all areas of research, but perhaps particularly so for studies of regions of the world where material conditions in libraries are not conducive to long-term storage of paper copies. This is the case in Southeast Asia, where library materials are greatly at risk from climatic and insect damage. For this reason there are a number of initiatives, national, regional and international to preserve some of these sources on film.

Many newspapers and vernacular serials are available on microform: The Center for Research Libraries, and the Library of Congress office in Jakarta have been active on behalf of this country in promoting preservation filming projects in the countries of Southeast Asia. Similarly, the overseas offices of the Ecole Francaise d'Extreme Orient and the Koninklijk Insitutuut voor Taal-, Land- en Volkenkunde (KITLV), based in Leiden, have undertaken such projects, and the British Library and the India Office Library are filming newspapers for preservation and storage reasons. It has been a policy for most of these filming projects to give the master negative of the film to National Libraries of country of origin. In consequence National Libraries of Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines are able to make positive copies of these items for interested libraries and researchers. The libraries of Cornell, Yale, Michigan and the University of Hawaii also have large microfilm holdings, including a master negative from which copies can be made. Similarly, libraries in Southeast Asia, like the Ateneo de Manila University Library, are good source of newspapers on film.

The Southeast Asia library community has attempted to track the availability of sources on film through a number of publications, which can be useful research tools:

Masterlist of Southeast Asian Microforms. SARBICO (Southeast Asia Branch of the International Council on Archives) and CONSAL (Congress of SEA Librarians). A good union list of the holdings of essentially the ASEAN countries - not so good for Indochina.

Microforms newsletter. Singapore: Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. Ceased publication for some years, but is now published again. On order for Perstx.

Library of Congress. Newspapers in microform. Z6945.U515 1948/83

Southeast Asia Microforms (SEAM) Project

A program administered by the Center for Research Libraries, SEAM operates in close conjunction with the Committee on Research Materials on Southeast Asia, a sub-committee of the Association for Asian Studies. SEAM has ongoing programs to film newspapers and other historical materials from Southeast Asia and has considerable holdings, including government publications, newspapers, serials and manuscripts. The holdings of this project can be found in an unpublished list produced by Lian The Mulliner of the University of Ohio, available through the Southeast Asia Section Office, or through the SEAM home page. Many of the newspapers and serials held by SEAM are not fully cataloged by CRL and do not appear in their online catalog. Therefore, consulting one of these specific guides is recommended. For further information about the SEAM Program or its holdings, consult the Southeast Asia Section Office.
