Civilians in 2nd VN WarFrom dgm405@coombs.anu.edu.au Mon Apr 18 19:00:53 2005 Is anyone researching the lives of civilian Vietnamese during the 2nd Vietnam/Indochina War? There is a project afoot to compile a book on civilians in wartime Asia. I promised to query the VSG list and route any responses to the prospective editor. Some of the topics suggested are: daily life at work and in the home; the roles of women; schooling and youth culture; media; leisure and humor; religion and festivities. They are looking for informed overviews that will bring the topic alive to undergrads and intelligent general readers. For Vietnam, I think it might be hard to handle both north and south in one essay, but on the other hand a comparison might be more original and lively.
From hhtai@fas.harvard.edu Mon Apr 18 19:20:55 2005 David, I am about to lecture on Vietnamese wartime experiences. One contrast I draw is de-urbanization in the north owing to the bombing of cities and increased urbanization in the south owing to the fighting (and bombing) in the countryside. But I have no plan to do systematic research on the topic. Hue-Tam |
