The Pacific Northwest Collection general collection development statement reads:

The Pacific Northwest collection contains materials documenting the historic and contemporary life and culture of the region. Subjects covered are art, anthropology, architecture, business and economic conditions, conservation and environmental affairs, cultural activities, fiction, flora and fauna, geology, history, politics and government, labor unions and employment, minority affairs and movements, recreation, and poetry published by poets residing in the region.

The collection includes materials from the prehistoric period for Northwest Coast Indians, and from the mid-nineteenth century to the present for other subjects. Collections within the regional umbrella also include a reference collection, scrapbooks, and a Mount St. Helens collection. Related collections include the photograph, manuscript, University Archives, and Book Arts collections in Special Collections, as well as the UW Libraries Microform and Newspaper collections, Government Documents, and the Map Collection.

Some of the special features of the collection include pre-1972 clippings on a wide range of Pacific Northwest subjects (pamphlet files), telephone and city directories, fiction set in the Pacific Northwest, explorers' journals, plat atlases, and materials on local theater, outdoor recreation, Northwest Coast Native Americans, and local histories.
