The big surprise of the crew year was the Junior Varsity's feat of upsetting the experts and taking second place in the Intercollegiate Regatta at Syracuse, New York. The JVs captured the Number Two prize just behind the strong Navy crew. It was a fine effort by a team which, like the Varsity, had been constantly hampered during training by foul weather and insufficient conditioning. Up to the time of the Nationals, the Husky Juniors rowed only against California. Here they were over-anxious. Knowing they had a long way to go to win, the JVs wanted to do everything they could. Consequently, they tried to row harder than they were physically capable, but nevertheless they did row better than any previous practice session. The JV boating included Fil Leanderson, George Clarke, Roland Camfield, Phil Horrocks, Bill Cameron, Dick Wahlstrom, John Thompson, Eric Fonkalsrud, and Coxswain Al Rossi. If the National Meet is indicative of future performance, it appears that, with these men forming the nucleus of next year's varsity, the future success of Varsity Crew is assured. |
