Historical Note

The Alpine Lakes Protection Society of Washington was a citizens' conservation organization. Founded in 1968, it promoted congressional enactment of a national recreation area in the Cascade Mountains of north central Washington. It had chapters in Seattle, Wenatchee, Ellensburg, and briefly in Yakima. Besides seeking statutory protection for the area, the Alpine Lakes Protection Society of Washington worked to forestall extractive uses likely to affect the wilderness quality of the Alpine Lakes region. In June 1976 Congress passed the Alpine Lakes Management Act of 1976, which established the Alpine Lakes Wilderness.

Arrangement
This accession is arranged in fifteen series representing the papers of individual leaders and activists of the Alpine Lakes Protection Society. To the extent possible, these series have been arranged in a chronological sequence. Within this arrangement, the series fall into three categories: first, records of activists not primarily identified with any one chapter (e.g., organization-level officers and committee chairmen); second, records of Seattle chapter chairmen (two of whom also served later as Alpine Lakes Protection Society president); and third, records of chapter chairmen and trustees from east of the Cascades (Ellensburg, Yakima, and Wenatchee). Arrangement within the series varies somewhat because of different filing practices of the various leaders. Each individual's filing labels and arrangement have been retained insofar as possible. Biographical information and content notes for each series are listed at the start of each series.
Scope and Content
The records of the Alpine Lakes Protection Society document the work of its involved individuals and activists. Records includes correspondence, subject and committee files, and other organizational records, including maps, from 1968 to 1977.
Restrictions on Use
The literary rights of the Alpine Lakes Protection Society and of representatives of the records-creating organization have been transferred to the University of Washington Libraries.
