Palmer Smith Jr. (1922-2004) was a Seattle lawyer and an advocate for civil rights, social justice, and education. He was married to Dorothy (Dottie) Boetter in 1945 with whom he had three children: Jennifer, Jared and Melissa. Palmer Smith Jr. was the son of Palmer Smith (1891-1955) and Martha Baynes Smith (1898-1984) who married in 1921. The senior Palmer Smith was a journalist. Martha Baynes Smith was an artist whose pen name was "Ariel Baynes". Some of Ariel Baynes artwork is in the Arents Collection (History of Tobacco) in the New York Public Library. Palmer Smith Sr. was the son of Anna R. Palmer and Albert F. Smith who married in 1877. Anna R. Palmer's parents were Monroe Palmer (1819-1892) and Martha B. Palmer (1826-1912). Other family members reflected in the material include: Palmer Smith Jr.'s brother, Frank White Smith (1928-2003), his uncle, Francis Adams Smith (died 1956), and Baynes family members.

| Consisting primarily of family correspondence, this group of materials also includes seven scrapbooks of clippings from Palmer Smith Sr.'s journalism career, genealogical histories of the Baynes, Coolidge, Palmer and Smith families, and writings, foremost by Palmer Smith Sr., but also by Anna R. Palmer Smith, and Martha Baynes Smith. Other material of note includes correspondence from the White House (Martha Baynes Smith's brother, William, was married to Hubert Humphrey's sister, Fern); a file relating to President J.F. Kennedy's planned trip to Seattle in 1962 which was cancelled due to the Cuban Missile Crisis; books owned by family members (including an autograph book) which date to the 19th century; and original drawings, reproductions, and writings by "Ariel Baynes," which was a psuedonym used by Martha Baynes Smith. | |||||||||||||||||||
