This collection of restaurant menus spans the years between 1889 and
2003. Most of the restaurants are located in Seattle and the Pacific Northwest
region of the United States. Also included in the collection are travel-related
menus from ships, railroads, and airplanes.
Restaurants in all styles and classes of trade are represented, from
lunch counters to first-class gourmet establishments. Menus, placemats, and
other graphic materials from many of the Puget Sound area's most famous
restaurants are in the collection. Some are illustrated with drawings and
photographs.
Among the many historical menus in the collection are those from the
Space Needle Restaurant, Ivar's Acres of Clams, the Dog House, Dan &
Louis's Oyster Bar, and the Alaska and Pacific Steam Ship Lines.
The collection is divided into seven series: Series I. Restaurants:
Seattle, A-C; Series II. Restaurants: Seattle, D-H; Series III. Restaurants:
Seattle, I-P; Series IV. Restaurants: Seattle, Q-Z; Series V. Restaurants:
Pacific Northwest and British Columbia; Series VI. Restaurants: United States
and Abroad; Series VII. Excursion Travel. The menus are arranged alphabetically
within each series.
Access to some originals is restricted; photocopies are available for
viewing. Contact the repository for details.
