The original Washington Hotel, also known as the Denny Hotel, was demolished in 1907 as a result of the Denny Regrade project, which lasted from 1902-1911 and flattened one of the steepest hills in Seattle at the time. Then-owner James Moore rebuilt the hotel circa 1908 and it was known as both the New Washington Hotel and the Hotel New Washington. The building has been renamed as the Josephinium and is now a low-income apartment complex.
