Biographical Note
B. Dudley Stuart was born in London and lived in Edmonton and
Vancouver, B.C., before moving to Seattle in 1918. In Seattle he formed a
partnership with A. Wheatley to create the architectural firm of Stuart &
Wheatley. Responsible for designing many of Seattle's historic hotels,
apartment buildings, commercial buildings, and private residences during the
1920s and 1930s, the firm's most notable work included the Exeter House and the
Mayflower Park Hotel (originally the Bergonian). In 1941, Stuart established a
partnership with Robert L. Durham, and their firm also designed many buildings
in the Seattle area. At age 86, Stuart retired due to failing eyesight. He died
in Seattle at age 92. Robert L. Durham, another well-known Seattle architect, also practiced
with the firm of Durham, Anderson, and Freed, which designed over 200 churches
in the Seattle area. Durham died in 1998. Scope and ContentThe photographs in this collection document some of the many designs
created by the architectural firms of Stuart & Wheatley and Stuart and
Durham. Included in the Stuart & Wheatley series are interior and exterior
photographs of some of Seattle's historic hotels and early apartment buildings.
In addition, the collection contains photographs of various commercial
buildings and unidentified private residences designed by the firm. The second part of the collection is comprised by an album with
photographs of the offices of Stuart and Durham, as well as buildings designed
by that firm, including churches, residences, and apartments. All buildings are located in Seattle unless otherwise noted. Restrictions on AccessCollection is open to the public. Acquisition InfoGift of Norm Johnston, Feb. 9, 1982. Processing InfoProcessed by Rebekah Dalby, 2003.
