Biographical Note

Douglas Chapman was a professor of mathematical statistics and an expert on wildlife statistics. He was born in 1920 and died in 1996. Chapman served as Dean of the University of Washington College of Fisheries from 1971 to 1981 and directed the UW Center For Quantitative Science In Forestry, Fisheries, and Wildlife from 1980 to 1982. His area of expertise was in estimating marine mammal populations and population dynamics. He chaired the International Whaling Commission's Scientific Committee from 1965 to 1974. Chapman was one of the scientific advisors to the International Whaling Commission who warned in the 1960s that the number of whales being taken by the whaling industry was far in excess of what the population could stand. He also chaired the U.S. Marine Mammal Commission's Scientific Committee from 1973 to 1976 and the U.S. Marine Mammal Commission from 1976 to the early 1980s.

Scope and Content

The Chapman papers span the years 1949 to 1988. They primarily document Chapman's work with the International Whaling Commission and the U.S. Marine Mammal Commission, as well as his research and consulting work on marine mammals.

Processing Info

The Chapman papers were partially processed in 1998. Papers clearly identifiable as records of the U.S. Marine Mammal Commission or the International Whaling Commission were separated as subgroups. Scientific literature and related material was arranged by broad category in Subject Series. Some of this material may relate to Chapman's work with one of the commissions. Other overlap may be found in the records series, Teaching Material, which includes some of Chapman's research data and writings. Original order was maintained in these files.
