In 1939 Lingafelter joined the faculty of the University of Washington, where his research concentrated on the use of x-ray crystallography to study the structure of inorganic metal complexes. He was also interested in chemical education and was one of the earliest faculty members to participate in the university's televised course program. Lingafelter was acting chair of the Department of Chemistry 1976-1978, and he retired in 1983.
