Published by G.K. Hall. Now 25 years out of date, this reference book is still a good place to start for basic background and an overview of the basic film theory and history texts.

Published by Fairleigh Dickinson University Press. Frank Manchel models approaches to studying film. Book presents conceptual aspects of film, and illustrates how primary and secondary sources may enhance different perspectives.

A guide to recent books and articles published about video, television, and cinema in South Asia and Southeast Asia. These are found in the University of Wisconsin-Madison general library system. Ira Konigsberg's second edition provides over 4,000 entries of practical film terminology and the basic language needed to understand what happens when a film is made. This source also provides line drawings and photographs that help readers to visualize the machinery, techniques, technology and film history.

Published by St. James Press, an imprint of Gale. The four volume series includes: v.1 Films, v.2 Directors, v.3 Actors and Actresses and v.4 Writers and Production Artists. Each entry includes production information, cast and crew lists, a select bibliography of works about each film and an essay by a specialist in the field. Many entries are illustrated with a still. A geographic index allows you to locate films by their country or countries of origin.

Entries are arranged alphabetically by the titles under which the novels were published with cross references from the film titles. Entries include production information, listings of directors and screenwriters, the film's release date, the production company and the releasing company, a plot synopsis with an assessment of the novel's importance to the film, problems with adaptation to film and a list of references to other sources.

Published by Harper Perennial. Ephraim Katz concentrates on filmmakers and filmmaking in America, United Kingdom and other international subjects. The text covers the history of filmmaking for various countries, film organizations and events, and the inventions, techniques, processes, equipment and technical terms important to filmmaking. Biographies of directors, actors and actresses, and many other people involved in cinema are included. Complete filmographies accompany the entries of most directors and major stars.

*Key Concepts in Cinema Studies. 1996.
Published by Routledge. Susan Hayward presents a glossary of key theoretical terms and, where appropriate, the various debates surrounding them. It also provides historical overviews of key genres, film theory and film movements.

Film History

*The Altering Eye: Contemporary International Cinema. 1983.
Published by Oxford University Press. Robert Kolker provides history and analysis of European and Latin American cinema, starting with neo-realism, and exploring the work of Godard, the British and Italian movements of the Sixties, Cuban revolutionary cinema, Cinema Novo and the new German cinema of the Seventies.

While the book it out of print, Kolker has put the complete text online at http://www.otal.umd.edu/~rkolker/AlteringEye/. This online edition is a visual work in progress, with stills and moving images selected to elucidate the text more accurately.

*American Film Scripts Online
American Film Scripts Online (AFSO) currently contains 265 scripts by 334 writers. Searches can be done through information fields on the scenes, characters and people related to the scripts. This database continues to grow and will eventually contain approximately 1,000 film scripts.

*Internet Moving Image Archive
"The films on this site focus on twentieth-century North American history and culture, and also include some coverage of the broader world. Centered around everyday life, culture, industry and institutions in the United States from 1905 to 1969, this collection presents a wide range of images that have not generally been available to the public until now."

*Inventing Entertainment: The Motion Pictures and Sound Recordings of the Edison Companies.
This site, offered by the Library of Congress American Memory Collection, features 341 motion pictures, 81 disc sound recordings, and many other materials surviving from Thomas Edison's entertainment inventions and industries. The site is accessable through a keyword search, by browsing the alphabetical title list or by browsing the subject index. Histories of Edison's involvement with motion pictures and sound recordings, as well as a brief biography of the inventor's life are also provided.

*Magill's American Film Guide.
Lists in alphabetical order brief analyses of 1000 major American films. Essays range from 3-8 pages in length and critically examine the film and its relationship to film history.

*The Oxford Guide to Film Studies, edited by John Hill and Pamela Church Gibson. 1998.
Published by Oxford University Press. This is a companion book to The Oxford History of World Cinema. The work emphasizes film theory and criticism over industrial and artistic issues.
