Rending and model for one of Conklin's designs for San Francisco
Opera's Ring cycle.
For the Leipzig Ring Circle (below), which premiered
1973 through 1976,
Heinrich's vision was of 19th century industrialism. The gods are
magnates and
exploiters; the darfs are work-slaves. Monumentality and parody
are both
present in the Herz-Heinrich Ring. Huge photo-murals
were used, as were on
stage spotlights, projections, and grotesque mechanical reptiles
more reminis-
cent of excavation equpment than snakes or dragons. For Carl
Orff's Antigone,
Heinrich's sets and costumes were stark and stylized (bottom).

Tassilo Baur was the man responisble for
the largest fire ever set onstage, created for Seattle Opera's
1987 Der Ring des Nibelungen.
The flames reached a height of 20' in the air before a blue silk
curtain descended--symbolizing the Rhine River overflowing its
banks and appearing to extinguish the fire.
