Accumulation of elements in Salix and other species used in vegetation filters with focus on wood fuel quality /
In further studies, a method was developed to determine the proportions of nutrient-rich bark in coppiced Salix, while heavy metal phytoextraction capacity was assessed in two Salix vegetation filters. The relevance of proportion of bark on wood fuel quality and element removal from vegetation filters was also investigated. The concentrations of the elements studied in harvestable Salix shoot biomass were higher, meaning lower wood fuel quality, in plantations where proportion of bark was high. Removal of elements increased with biomass yield. As proportion of nutrient-rich bark decreases with increasing yield, longer cutting cycles should be considered, in order to improve fuel quality and nutrient removal potential

Alaskan Eskimo and Polynesian Island population skeletal anatomy the "Pacific paradox" revisited through surface area to body mass comparisons /
This project is an attempt to re-examine the "Pacific Paradox," as proposed by Philip Houghton (1996), through various morphological measurements on two climatically different populations, Alaskan Eskimo and Pacific Island groups. The "Pacific Paradox" has been widely discussed, but research using direct comparisons between this Pacific population and cold climate groups has received little attention. The methods employed are those preformed by Ruff (1994), Ruff et al. (1991, 2004, 2005) and Houghton (1996) to create the most accurate determination of overall body form in both populations. Eight measurements were used to construct variables to create an accurate portrayal of overall body shape. These measurements were taken on Alaskan Eskimo populations spread throughout the entire region of Alaska and on Polynesian populations from a wide variety of Pacific Islands. The overall comparisons demonstrate similarities in the two body mass estimations; the bi-iliac breadth measurement and maximum femoral head diameter, and in the overall stature to body mass ratios, except in the males, who are significantly different in every measurement apart from surface area to body mass ratios and stature to body mass ratios. Further studies on each population were conducted to determine the role of latitude or isolation factors on each population. Interestingly, the Alaskan group did not follow the stereotypical trend of cold climate adaptation based on latitude. In the female groups, the females from the lowest latitude had the lowest surface area to body mass ratios followed by the highest latitude group. The male groups followed the stereotype with the highest latitude group having the lowest surface area to body mass ratio but interestingly, the group from the lowest latitude had the next lowest ratio. Polynesian results illustrated somewhat similar body proportions throughout the region with only a few exceptions. Meanwhile, several individuals measured from the Polynesian collection could be considered part of Melanesia. Migration patterns, founder effect through disease frequencies, nutritional effects and cultural traits along with many other issues are presented when examining the similarities and differences the Polynesian population has in comparison to both the Alaskan group and the small Melanesian sample

Degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons by actinomycetes /
The potential of some actinomycetes to degrade polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and the effect of co-substrates, plants and other additives on their degradation and bioavailability was studied. A glass bead system for growth of PAH-degrading actinomycetes in liquid culture was developed and used for the screening of strains for biosurfactant activity and phenanthrene degradation in the presence of different co-substrates. Indication of biosurfactant production by all tested strains was obtained with hexadecane and rapeseed oil as co-substrates but not with glucose. Rhodococcus sp. DSM 44126 was identified as R. wratislaviensis and found to be able to degrade phenanthrene and anthracene. An actinomycete with a high capacity to degrade phenanthrene and pyrene was isolated from an agricultural soil and identified as Mycobacterium LP1. The catabolic activity of both strains was studied in liquid cultures and in soil. Several additives were also tested for their effect on PAH degradation in soils. The surfactant Triton X-100, but not wheat straw, promoted PAH degradation in a soil with aged creosote by increasing the bioavailability of the compounds. The presence of plants increased the proportion of active microorganisms and enhanced PAH degradation, likely due to root exudates provided by the plants. In a PAH-spiked soil, the addition of rapeseed oil (1% w/w) stimulated the degradation of anthracene and benzo(a)pyrene mainly as a result of abiotic processes, but negatively affected the degradation of phenanthrene and pyrene, probably due to limitations in nutrient and oxygen supply. Based on these results, a new sequential treatment in two steps for cleaning PAH-contaminated soil was designed and tested using four different PAH as model substances. The first step consisted of the inoculation with Mycobacterium LP1, favouring biological degradation of low-molecular-weight PAH, and the second step consisted of the addition of rapeseed oil, which promoted the abiotic transformation, and probably also the solubilisation, of the high-molecular-weight PAH

Effects of bottom fishing on Georges Bank
In order to gain a better understanding of how bottom fishing impacts benthic organisms, a team of researchers from the University of Rhode Island's Graduate School of Oceanography (GSO) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) set out in 1994 to survey the benthic megafaunal community of Georges Bank. This project's study area was confined to the gravel habitat that straddles the boundary between the U.S. and Canadian exclusive economic zones (EEZs). This area was selected because previous research has indicated that it serves as an important nursery for juvenile cod (Gadus morhua) and haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus). Within this region, trawl marks appearing in side scan sonar images were counted in order to identify sites with different levels of bottom fishing disturbance. Based on this information, six study sites were pinpointed and classified as either "disturbed" or "undisturbed." At these sites, benthic dredge samples have been collected on a nearly annual basis. In addition, photographs and videos of the sea floor have been recorded using the SEABOSS system, remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), and manned submersibles. Data from this project have revealed significant differences between disturbed and undisturbed sites in terms of abundance, biomass, species diversity, and benthic community structure. In December 1994, three large sections of Georges Bank, comprising an area of 17,000 km2, were closed to all types of fishing gear capable of retaining groundfish. Since one of our most disturbed study sites was located within a closed area, this event provided a unique opportunity to investigate the changes that occur as a benthic ecosystem recovers from chronic fishing impacts

Function, design, and establishment of riparian forest buffers a review /
Through the interaction of their soils, hydrology, and biotic communities, riparian forests protect and improve water quality, provide habitat for plants and animals, support aquatic communities, and provide many benefits to humans. Virginia, along with other states in the Chesapeake Bay region, has recognized the importance of riparian forests by implementing a plan to restore forested buffers along streams, rivers, and lakes. This project reviews selected literature on riparian forest buffers, including water quality functions, benefits to fish and wildlife, and human benefits. The review also discusses riparian buffer restoration and some of the costs and barriers associated with riparian forest buffer establishment. Information on financial and technical assistance programs available to Virginia landowners is included

Impacts of trawling and scallop dredging on benthic habitats and communities /
Over the last two decades, concerns about the impact of towed fishing gears such as trawls and dredges on benthic habitats and organisms have increased. This publication reviews the most recent experimental studies of the impact of towed fishing gears on benthic communities. Otter trawls, beam trawls and scallop dredges are likely to have different physical impacts on the sea bed owing to their different catching techniques. The most noticeable physical effect of otter trawling is the furrow created by the doors. Beam trawling and scallop dredging cause a flattening of irregular bottom topography by eliminating natural features. The long-term effects of fishing activities have not been investigated although several studies provide clear evidence of short-term consequences. The difficulty in conducting impact studies that produce clear conclusions stems mainly from the complexity and natural variability of benthic communities

potential sensitivity of marine mammals to mining and exploration in the Great Australian Bight Marine Park Marine Mammal Protection Zone an independent review and risk assessment report to Environment Australia /
This document contains an independent review of available information related to the sensitivities of marine mammals known to occur in the Great Australian Bight Marine Park (whales, dolphins, and sea lions) to activities conducted by the gas and petroleum industry during the course of their operations (including exploration, production, and decommissioning). A risk assessment was undertaken to determine the potential risks associated with possible future petroleum activities occurring within the Marine Mammal Protection Zone of the Great Australian Bight Marine Park (Commonwealth Waters) for incorporation into a review of the current management plan for the marine park, due to commence in 2003. Despite a significant number of publications on this topic, it was the general conclusion of the authors that there is still insufficient definitive data to determine, with any degree of certainty, what is likely to occur should petroleum operations be allowed in the Marine Mammal Protection Zone under the next management plan. In the context of the importance of the area for the recovery and conservation of the Australian sea lion and the southern right whale, application of the precautionary principle, as defined in the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act), would support the continuation of the current ban on such activities until significantly more information is available demonstrating that these activities would not significantly impact upon southern right whales in this critical aggregation habitat and Australian sea lions in the coastal area

Restoration of degraded land a comparison of structural and functional measurements of recovery /
Vegetation structure in amended sites, as measured by total vegetation cover and species richness, recovered to levels similar to references within the two years of the study. Plant community composition did not develop similarity to references in any experimental treatments. Both soil amendment and seeding type affected cellulose decomposition rates, with amended plots showing higher decomposition rates than unamended, and seeded plots exhibiting higher rates than unseeded. Enzyme activities were largely determined by soil amendment, but the reference plots consistently had higher enzymatic activity. Amended sites exhibited significant increases over time in soil respiration, reaching or surpassing the rates observed in reference areas. Methane oxidation rates were generally increased in disturbed plots compared to undisturbed references due to increased atmospheric diffusion into the soil. Amended areas exhibited depressed rates relative to unamended, and seeding level had no significant effect on methane oxidation. Over all measurements, restoration of ecosystem function was most facilitated by the addition of the soil amendment. Seeding treatment significantly altered the resultant plant community, which may have substantial, long-term consequences for succession. The inclusion of functional parameters into restoration assessment provides for better overall information concerning ecosystem performance and may add to the ability to predict long-term success of restoration efforts

Review of riparian buffer zone effectiveness
The purpose of this report is to review and summarise published research on the efficiency and management of riparian buffer zones (RBZ) with respect to the attenuation of sediment and nutrients, and biodiversity enhancement. While there have been numerous studies on the efficiency of RBZ with respect to sediment and nutrients, many of these studies have been small-scale and site-specific. Therefore, a review of these studies needs to consider an assessment of the catchment scale factors that influence the effectiveness of RBZ in attenuating catchment loads
