Assignment GuideYou will be given an assignment to research a type of paper or paperboard product.Be sure to clarify your assignment with your professor or TA before you come to the library. 1. Start by thinking about the terms that would be used to describe the product. Are their various ways to refer to this product? Are there brand names or companies associated with this product? Write down everything you know about the product before you begin to research it. What have you learned in class or from your textbook about this product? Use this information to decide what terms to use for searching. 2. Start searching by going to the PaperChem database which is part of Paper Village. (Click on "Begin a new session" after using the link.) For an overview to searching the Database click on "Help". This database covers both scholarly (scientific articles) and some trade and news articles. This database does not include full text articles. However, some of them may be full text. Search the titles in the UW Libraries Catalog to see if we subscribe to the journal or newsletter title. If we don't, perhaps just the summary of the article will give you some information. Other information may be found in newspapers and trade publications. Try ABI Inform, Research Library, and the newspaper indexes on Proquest. Look at "Search Tips" for help in searching the databases. Many of these articles will be available in full text. For a full set of article databases available from the UW Libraries see Research Databases or Forest Resources Subject Pages 3. The web is a good source for company and product information. Sometimes a general search on the product will bring up companies who produce the product. Some companies give technical information on the product, but many are just sales oriented. It may take some looking to find the reliable information you need. 4. Some library resources that may help you:
