Resources marked UW restricted can be accessed by UW students, staff and faculty from off-campus - see Connecting From Home.

When using a database to identify articles on a topic, look for and use the link to "Check UW Holdings" which will link to the text of the article or information about where you can go get the article in the library. If there is no link to Check UW Holdings search the journal title in the UW Libraries Catalog to see if the publication is available, whether in print, electronic, or microfilm format, and in what library on campus.

If the databases listed below are not adequate for your topic check the Geography Subject Page or Contact a Librarian for assistance.

CIA World Factbook: 2008 edition.
Europa World Year Book Online UW restricted: Presents political and economic information on ALL countries and territories as well as international organizations. Features statistical data and directories.
Country Studies/Area Handbooks: Easy to browse e-books cover history, society and environment, government and politics, economics, culture, health, education systems, etc. for 101 nations - published between 1988 and 1998.
Economist Intelligence Unit Country Profiles UW restricted: Country Reports analyse political and economic trends in nearly 200 countries. Country Profiles outline a country's economic and political status and background.
UC Atlas of Global Inequality: The Atlas of Global Inequality explores some aspects of inequality using online, downloadable maps and graphics
Migration Policy Institute: An independent, non-partisan, non-profit think-tank in Washington, D.C. dedicated to the study of the movement of people worldwide. The link to Migration Information Source leads to global data on migration.

National Newspapers UW restricted: Covers 27 major U.S. newspapers and other U.S., international, and minority interest papers. Includes some fulltext.
Newsbank Retrospective 1970-1991 UW restricted: Newspaper articles covering social, political, economic, environmental, international, health, and science issues and events from contemporary American history, including firsthand reports and varying regional perspectives.
The Historical New York Times UW restricted: Full text, 1851-2002.
Washington State Newspapers
Pacific Northwest Regional Newspaper & Periodical Index: Contains citations from newspapers, periodicals, monographs, scrapbooks, dissertations, pamphlets, and other ephemera dealing with all aspects of life in Seattle, Washington State, and the Pacific Northwest from the 1850s to the present. Text of articles cited are NOT online so be sure to ask for assistance!

UW Libraries Web Page - Reference Tools - Statistics: A starter list of statistical sources available online provided by state, federal, and international agencies. But don't stop here!
WDI Online UW restricted: The World Development Indicators provided by the World Bank is an annual compilation of data about development, providing direct access to more than 550 development indicators, with time series for 208 countries and 18 country groups from 1960 to 2004.
UN Data - United Nations Statistics Division: Provides demographic & social, energy, environment, industry, national accounts, and trade data for U.N. member countries. A list of national statistical offices is provided.
Portals to the World: Library of Congress guide to authoritative websites, browse by country name.
International Inter-Governmental Organization (IGO) Statistical Resources: Access the statistical resources of IGOs such as the UN, OECD, IMF, WHO, ILO, UNICEF, UNESCO and more dealing with international trade, finance, population, health, labor, and development issues, to name just a few.

RefWorks: Web based software to save, organize and format bibiliographic citations. Available at no cost and from any computer.
EndNote Imports: EndNote is software that helps you manage bibliographic citations and is available in the computer labs in Mary Gates Hall, Odegaard Library, Access+ computers provided in several campus libraries, and the computers in the Geography Collaboratory, Smith 415.
