Some tips and databases useful for finding primary sources in the UW Libraries dealing with African history and the slave trade. Also check the primary sources available on Reserve in Odegaard Undergraduate Library.
The UW Libraries has books (many on microfilm) that can be considered primary sources for African history. These include books written during the period for your topic (i.e., during the 17th century), books written by participants, published collections of correspondence and other personal writings, memoirs and reprints of collections of primary source material.

- English Short Title Catalogue (ESTC) UW Only.
ESTC is a catalog to printed works published in English (as well as material in other languages published in England and its colonies) from the beginning of printing through the end of the eighteenth century. Most of the items are available in the UW Libraries as part of three major microfilm sets: Early English Books 1475-1640, Early English Books 1640-1700, and the Eighteenth Century.

The UW Libraries has a strong collection of American and British magazines from the 18th and 19th centuries. Many of them are in print (either in Suzzallo Periodicals or in a storage area), others are on microfilm. There is limited electronic indexing for 18th and 19th century material.
