Catalogs

Use the following databases to locate books as well as journal subscriptions in the UW Libraries and in other libraries around the region.

Indexes

Use databases to find articles (and sometimes books, dissertations, etc.) on a topic. There are datbases covering all sorts of subjects, use those which best fit your research topic. Most database just provide a citation (author, title, journal name, volume, pages and year) and brief abstract (a description of the article); a couple provide full text of some articles.

Once you identify articles you need to make sure you have the complete citation, then look in the journal search portion of the UW Libraries Catalog for the journal name (do a title search for the journal name to see if the UW subscribes) to see if and where the journal is kept (library location and call number).

Articles from journals which the UW does not own can be requested through the Interlibrary loan.

Newspaper Indexes

The Microform and Newspaper Collections on the ground floor of Suzzallo Library has a large current and past collection of international and domestic papers.

One special project of the unit is the Ethnic and Special Audience Newspapers of the Pacific Northwest, a pilot project to compile a list of all ethnic and special audience papers with brief descriptions and sample pages. Currently the newspapers listed in the project are all held at the UW Libraries. For more information about the project and to identify other papers held at the University of Washington, check with the Microform and Newspaper Collections.
